Puerta del Cielo is the best hotel one can find in Bacalar. We were 2 couples who booked 2 rooms with lagoon views and we were mesmerized by the beauty of this hotel and the atmosphere. When we arrived, they immediately opened the doors to paradise, carried our luggage and we were greeted by all the employees which seemed very personal, friendly and made us feel incredibly welcomed. We received a welcome drink, did our check in and then received a tour of the hotel grounds before heading to our rooms. Let me just say that this is without a doubt the most beautiful boutique hotel one could possibly find not just in Mexico but probably anywhere. The bar, the path that stretches throughout the hotel, the pools (one next to the bar and the other one overlooking the lagoon), the balconies, rooms, the view, staff, the dock, EVERYTHING is perfect! There is quiet jazz music playing in the background in the patio and everything is just perfect! We also loved the idea of not having the typical breakfast that we received in 5 other hotels while traveling around Yucatan and Q.R. Every 4 and 5 star hotel would offer the same thing every day, which after 2 weeks becomes a bit dull and P.D.C. was a perfect little break from the usual routine. They don’t offer rooms with breakfast included. You get a menu (which is very good with lots of options) and you order through Whatsapp all over the hotel. You just write what you want and where and they bring it to you. And the food - WOW, they work so hard for every single dish!!! Also, a lot of staff would remember who we were and would call us by name which I really appreciate. We even had a dinner on the dock and it was our favorite dinner in our lives! We were greeted by our chef who recommended the catch of the day and it was delicious! I/we want to come back to Puerta del Cielo many times and just hope to have the opportunity to do it.

The lagoon is exceptional, with stunning natural surroundings, beautiful light, and clean water. Bacalar is a town in transition - already a compelling mix of authenticity and contemporary comforts, with a few excellent restaurants, cafés, and bars, yet thankfully not fully overtaken by rapid gentrification. It feels like exactly the right moment to visit.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors. It’s a nice local town, but tourist facilities are limited. Public access to the lagoon is restricted, and hotels, restaurants, and cafés are expensive considering the level of service provided. Cenotes and Los Rápidos are far from downtown, and some facilities are mandatory even if you don’t really need them, such as life jackets etc. Overall, Cancun and Tulum are much better equipped for tourists and offer better value for the money.

Bacalar is a beautiful place to visit if you appreciate nature, peace and quite. The lagoon was my favorite place. You must try out the food at Mango and Chile, the best! I had my own rental car so getting around was pretty easy. Definitely recommend a boat tour.

It’s a tiny town, best to get around with a car but taxis are available too. It has a proper Caribbean vibe and the lagoon is just fantastic - really clean, warm and sweet water. We also enjoyed the food at La Playita restaurant.

Lake is beautiful, weather is great (despite the sudden changes), and feeling closer to nature is amazing. You have good food around, but several places are prepared to have foreign visitors spend lots of money for not-local foods. Seek for smaller non-fancy places to eat in order to taste real Mexico (don't eat a steak here... this is no meat land but seafood instead!). Need a car to do everything you want and need to enjoy Bacalar (highly recommended). Place is safe to walk around 24/7. Buy some goodies and drinks in advance to getting to your hotel to have something handy when everything is closed (remember, Southern Mexico opens late, takes a mid-day nap, and closes not that late). Take a hat, confortable sandals and water-based sun protection to avoid harming the corals. And Please, don't complain about animals and bugs: that is call NATURE!!

Bacalar is a great place but need to trim the streets of branches for flow of traffic .i choose a 5 star hotel but was very disappointed with my room and structure it is not my type more for back packers i asked for cancelation but they refuse so i did not stay there i had to get a other hotel . at 62 years why climb 8 feet to get on my bed very dangerous for elders

Casa Mexico Linda was amazing. It’s a new hostel and you can really feel the care behind it. The staff help with all recommendations and tours. I booked a boat tour plus sunset and sunrise paddle sessions and everything was excellent. It’s clean, quiet but very sociable, with well-designed dorms and thick curtains. Very safe, beautifully designed, with cute dogs and cats. If you are a solo traveler and not into party hostels, I highly recommend it. Special shout-out to the staff. they welcome you like family.

Would recommend this boutique hotel to anyone traveling to Bacalar. - staff is super friendly and helpful - sharing local recos and helping with transportation. Special shout-out to Norman who speaks fluent French and was exceptional with us! We loved the eco boat tour of the lagoon he recommended - the breakfast is amazing, lots of options to choose from, and everything is delicious - the pool structure is fun and you can even jump from the top

it was a very well maintained apartment with a high quality bed, the best I slept in during my 3 weeks in Mexico. the staff communicated clear, pleasant and swift and was very helpful. initially I thought to arrive at 4pm but it turned out to be 4am. we were let into a better room than we booked for without extra charge or hassle. so grateful! nice tips for trips and restaurants. this is the kind service one hopes for when booking!

Nice spacious 2 bedroom apartment next to the pool. The children of 10 and 13 years liked the net and hamac/relaxing chair upstairs most. Good breakfast with several options like scrambled eggs, Mexican warm special dish, pancakes and toast. Nice restaurant, good food, not a lot of options but fine and good cocktails. Really kind staff, nice pool, liked this hotel most of the 8 hotels in Mexico. 5 minutes walk to city centre.

Where can i start? From the beginning to the end everything was perfect. Being from Europe we are not use to have such a good service and and Mexico its something normal but especially in this Hotel is was another level.
