My Mum and I went to Geilo specifically for the Ice Music Festival. It's a ski resort really so apart from skiing and the festival there isn't much else going on. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside and I'd love to go back in summer to do some walking and cycling. It's definitely worth going to in winter as well though as the place is beautiful, wintery and magical.
Off-season Geilo is like a ghost town. I visited in early September - summer is over, winter has not come yet. It's a plus when you're on hike, no crowds, no noise, no waiting for toilet in monuntain lodges. But it's nearly spooky when you're out dining. September in Geilo is for those who enjoy outdoors and shorter or longer hikes but at the same time don't fancy carrying a huge backpack from cabin to cabin. From Geilo you can go some loop tours, different difficulty levels and still enjoy hot shower, hotel bed and good breakfast.
The people were very friendly and helpful, starting with the owner of the accommodation, the ski patrol, the staff of the medical centre and the bus drivers. Geilo is a wonderful place for skiing, with a wide variety of slopes and opportunities. We've been there twice and enjoyed it both times. Given that high winds meant that parts of the ski resorts needed to be closed, it would have been helpful if information about which lifts were open was easily available. For example, one of the lifts at Slaatta has a board with the lifts that are open, which is very helpful. If such information were more widely shared, hat would be great. It was an enjoyable stay at Geilo.
every ski resort can be good when the weather is kind. The really good ones make things work then conditions aren’t so good. Unfortunately the combination of relatively old and simple lifts , a vulnerability to westerly winds and staff who don’t proactively fight to get the very best out of the mountain , means this place is best avoided if the weather is in any way questionable. The problem as I see it is a lack of out of hours “prepping” and planning to get things as best as possible for the next day. A sort of lazyness. And “oh well” attitude. Lifts don’t start spinning for morning tests until 30minutes before customers arrive !!!! Also, there is a complete lack of “half mountain” loft options. This further compounds the vulnerability to wind because ALL the main lifts are bottom to top options. Of course it’s often windy at the top! But when you have no half mountain lifts it means the WHOLE mountain or the majority of the best lifts get shut too easily and then huge swathes of the real estate is off limits. Trysil, Hafjell, Hemsedal and many others all have mid station lifts so when there’s a storm guests can still hit large parts of the mountain. Geilo need to invest in some half mountain drags !!! I’m sure the place is amazing on a good day. But what I experienced is a less than proactive resort when the weather gets tougher.
This was merely a stop off on trip from Bergen to Drammen. Failed to calculate snowy weather and icy conditions crossing mountain range this time of year, headed SE. 2 1/2+hr trip to go 125 miles turned into 5 hrs. 7 and 6 degree road inclines caused some tense moments. Just snow flurries in Geilo does not mean no snow in higher elevations . Great skiing destination!
location is central for people travelling between oslo and Bergen for a short stay. i wouldn't recommend long stay as nothing much local in summer. Also ensure apartment is front facing . there are apartments facing backwords or underground with no views. only few apartments are facing front mountains which are shown in pictures (ensure that's provided if staying more than 1 night). no lift ..so be aware if with luggage and get top floor. reception is not at property ..its 1 km from property at their another close by hotel ..so if you don't have your own vehicle then painful check-in ..
