We had two weekdays in Gisborne and were a bit at a loss for what to do. Visited the Tairawhiti Museum - amazing - and a really good cafe. Took a drive up Kaiti Hill in time for sunset, which was quite spectacular and to Sponge Bay which was interesting but the waves came right up to the cliff, so didn't swim there. The local cinema was great, although we missed the start of the movie because there were so many people lined up. Was not impressed by the Dome cinema which just seemed to be just a pub with some random film showing. The thing that we really noticed was trying to find places to eat at night. Why were there so many restaurants shut? The places that were open were jam packed, with all saying they had a waiting time of an hour or so. The other thing is there seems to be no dedicated seafood restaurant although the fresh seafood available in Gisborne is the best I've ever tasted. The seafood dishes that we did get were quite similar to what you could buy at the fish and chip shops, although the fish and chips are beautiful.
We loved the technology museum on the main road. The woman who showed us around was very knowledgable, helpful and went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. We also visited the Eastwoodhill Arboretum and thought it was beautifully cared for and a pleasure to walk around. We really enjoyed the food we had at Burger Wisconsin and Lone Star.We found our way around easily even though it had been 12-13 years since our last trip to Gisborne. We were happy to see that the town seemed busier-lots of other people visiting on holiday. We will come back again-the roads have been improved since our last trip.
Great restaurant Three Rivers. Were very late and we ordered over the phone and meal was ready when we arrived. Really lovely modern unit. Adequate for us. Fab beaches. Lovely coastal drive north and thereon. Good for fishing. Pleasant walks around town and environs. On my next visit I would avoid a restaurant that used to be called Wild Foods. we visited it this time and it was disgusting. Mess visible, pot out the toilet window full of mucky, greasy water, food took long time coming. Quality of food could be much improved. Not much food choices. Presentation of cakes etc no eye appeal and food in hot box quite dry and dark coloured.
We loved the beaches, friendly local retail shops, Kaiti bakery supplied us with beautiful Maori bread. We ate all sauces from London St fish n chip shop, the kids loved the big park beside the Olympic pools. Rere rock slide is also fun. There is such a strong vibrant Maori culture alive in Gisborne, heaps of cafes, eateries and bars around the central township. Lovely place to visit. Very friendly locals.
Day trip up to Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay was interesting. Dinner at The Wharf restaurant and bar was some of the best food ever. Staff need some training a a bit slow but it's well worth the wait. The Scallops and Prawns are amazing and the chicken is delicious. Avoid the Turkish by the town clock. Very poor.
My 3rd trip to Gisborne, and each time I enjoy it more. The beaches are spectacular. Arboretum is a must do, along with feeding the wild stingray! Gisborne has a lovely feel to it, the well maintained gardens, the rivers and the palm trees give that real holiday destination vibe:-)
Great find in gisborne and the price was very reasonable compared to others. Everything was clearly labeled so everything was easy to find. There were so many homely touches. My son loved the basket of toys and books and enjoyed his time. We didn’t have much to do with the owners but they were very respectful of our privacy and didn’t bother us but were close if we needed anything. Would definitely recommend for couples & families. Thanks for letting us stay!
This place was a dream, beautiful house, pool, really helpful owner, our room was large and even had air con which was a life saver in the heat wave. Our bathroom was across the hall, but that didn’t put us off as it was very nicely done and had a private sign on. It was all very new and certainly a luxury b n b, the nicest by far we have stayed at in NZ. Thank you for a wonderful relaxing break.
The staff were amazing the cleaning ladies did an excellent job. The unit was excellent. The view was breath taking. Totally loved every day. So peaceful picture perfect was the best holiday ever. Thank you to all the staff at whispering sands. Will definitely stay at whispering sands when ever I go to gisborne. Have recommended this hotel to friends and family
Property was close to both beaches and a very short drive to town. Grounds were lovely and a pool was at your disposal. Guest laundry was a huge benefit to us. Owner even moved my load to the hotel machine when the guest machine gad issues. She is an absolute treasure. Thank you ! You made our stay memorable!!
Loved our weekend stay, we used the lodge as our base as we were in town for a family function. Great location easy to get from one place to the other, beautifully clean and well appointed room. Will be the only place we stay in Gisborne in the future.
It was quiet even closed to town.Everything was there I could imagine, all clean and decorated like a hotel. The host was very friendly and explained everything.I would like to come back.
So clean and comfortable. By far the best motel we've stayed in Gisborne. Would recommend it to anyone. AAA+++.

Location, size of rooms, swimming pool with spa bath
Close to Gisborne
Excellent from arrival. My family arrived 2 - 3 hours before check in time and the staff went straight to getting our room prepared for us so we could check in ASAP without any notice. The women who got our room prepared were both lovely and made conversation with us. The location is great! We had a one bedroom suite and it suited us just fine. 2 adults & 3 young children. Our room was extremely clean and comfortable. We will be back for sure. Thank you for your warm hospitality. G Aupouri & family
Beds & bathrooms - matters of the utmost importance in any stay. These guys have the most functional bathrooms ever! Hugely spacious, water pressure to bowl you over, as much heat (& consistency) as you'd ever need. Super-helpful hosts, nothing too much. Great location for peace & quiet yet only 3mins from the airport & 5mins to town - you need a vehicle to be sure - but this is provincial NZ - what else are you travelling in? Just outstanding.
Absolutely loved our short stay here. The location was perfect, the space/unit was clean and cozy, the spa was amazing, and sky tv gave the place an extra tick. Also really apprecited that we had room for our car. Check in was super easy, even though we arrived late. Would definitely stay here again and recommend this motel to anyone wanting to stay in Gisbourne!
The manager was absolutely excellent. Luckily for me, I saw the owner of the motel drive in, in her Velar, and I must say, that the hotel is well looked after and I recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Gisborne.
