First impressions of Whangarei was it was a small town, the roads were a bit confusing to navigate, the first few people we came across in the town area were rough and quite rude. As we went around the basin area we met some lovely people on walks. We found a nice park and ate at a few places. There were plenty of options for people with food intolerances. The city centre has very good bar, cafe, and restaurant options. The pedestrian mall provides great access and ambience. More dining options are close by at the town basin (riverfront), which also has a great pedestrian ambience, with walking paths and artwork. The Hundertwasser art centre provides a great visual backdrop and is worth a visit. There are very nice walks both up and down the river from the Basin, as well as short drives away. We especially appreciated the upgrade to the apartment which was spacious and had a good kitchen. The staff were incredibly friendly and responsive, for example replacing blown lightbulbs as soon as we mentioned it. The apartment was lovely and clean, with a retro vibe. The location was excellent, with a great supermarket almost next door and we walked to town several times.
