Spending a day or two there would have been enough, there was obvious poverty, with multiple homeless people. Not what I expected at all. I hired a car to visit the sites, but when I was driving around, everything looked closed, or uninviting. As a solo tourist, this wasn't the best place to visit. The people are what make it so good. Very polite people who appear to be honest and kind. The shopping mall across the road from the Hilton was a wonderful place with a food hall and a good supermarket. We enjoyed a day trip to Moorea and a taxi trip around that island. Also the 5-hour Tahiti group trip and the boat trip. I did not do any snorkelling as I do not swim and I thought perhaps an activity in knee-high water could have been included in the boat trip. Good shops and a huge market, though all very expensive. Their own hand-made pareos and other garments are beautiful. There is a lovely garden (Paofae) along the sea front which starts just beyond the marina. From here we watched the sunset which was stunning. There are beaches around the island, both white and black sand, but not in Papeete itself. There are buses but we didn't use them as we had the private tour.Guest review byJanet - 8.0

It was such a beautiful place. The open markets were exceptional in that they offered fresh produce and a variety of local arts and crafts. The artisans were truly gifted using unique techniques to highlight everyday items grown/foraged in the surrounding environment. I definitely plan to go back and soak up the island atmosphere!! And a shout out to a little establishment we ate at: Jojo's Pizza was the BOMB! You can use Papeete as a base for exploring other parts of French Polynesia. We took the short ferry ride to Moorea and stayed a few days - definitely a worthwhile trip. We also took a half-day trip around Tahiti that took in the highlights of the natural beauty of the island as well as some historical sites.Guest review byJ&G1983Australia

The outside of the hotel though, looks really bad, and so does the swimming pool area, with missing tiles, and fitness devices deposited near the pool. Hotels in Papeete are very expensive, but this one was not cheap either. The room looked 4*, but the outside looks like a 2*. It's a pity, as with some renovation work it would be an ok hotel. She even invited me on a boat trip! The apartment was excellent, very comfortable, very clean, well equipped and had everything I needed for my stay. The internet worked wonderfully. Some people wrote in past reviews that the hill was really steep. I did not find this at all. All I can say is that those people must have been really unfit! I would definitely stay here again. Complimentary shuttle service is provided by the hotel to/from the airport, which is a great aspect of staying here. The air conditioning in the room worked well. There are several restaurants within 10-15 minute walk, though the hotel is located on the side of the hill, so you may need to take a taxi if you are physically limited.
