Centrally located for hiking and nature areas.
Centrally located for hiking and nature areas. We went to Ferne Clyffe, Giant City, Trail of Tears, and LaRue Pine Hills. We picnicked in each of these places. All but LaRue had grills so we were able to cook meals. GPS sometimes took us on one lane gravel roads with the feeling that we were not going to get where we wanted to go....but we always got there. I would bring an atlas or paper map to augment the gps so you could see where you are in space.

Kind of sad what's happened to such a lovely little town...
Kind of sad what's happened to such a lovely little town where I was an undergrad decades ago. One of my friends said it's now just "East St. Louis with a university." (I hold no hate or disdain for East. St. Louis, by the way.) But the nearby state parks and natural beauty of the surroundings make it worth it.

While visiting family, it was a great trip.
While visiting family, it was a great trip. We went to the Fire Steakhouse. It was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. We also went to Walkers Bluff Winery. It was a lovely time sitting out on their patio tasting wine amidst all the plants, music and appetizers. I felt like I was in Napa not So. IL it was a gorgeous place. The staff at the Holiday Inn was stunning. Everyone from the front desk to the Housekeeping staff was so nice.

Giant State park was beautiful.
Giant State park was beautiful. So many things to do. Hiking ,horseback riding ,camping ,picnicking. The lodge was interesting and served all around good food. I recommend it for families especially. Good value. Can't forget the wineries! Who knew there were so many in Carbondale? Each one unique in there own wine,very nice products.

Carbondale is always a great time!
Carbondale is always a great time! I was here to run the River to River relay. I love the outdoor attractions, the weather, shopping, restaurants, and people. Don Taco, Quatro’s, Italian Village, Longbranch Cafe, CommonnGrounds, Little Grand Canyon, Giant City, and SIU are great to visit.

As a person who likes small towns and the countryside, Carbondale has a good mix of busy town centre, thanks to the nearby college, and southern Illinois rural area. If you are looking for bustling city to explore on vacation look elsewhere. Nice for a quasi-rural get away. Very easy to get around.
