We took the Train Ride from Durango to Silverton and Back. The train ride was great and all the staff were very attentive, cheerful and very helpful. Would recommend this trip. The fall would be a great time to take this trip with all the beautiful colors.

You have to take the Durango-Silverton steam train. Have to soak in one of the hot springs - we did not have enough time. There are nice trails around. We did not have enough time. Downtown is pretty, walkable with nice restaurants.

The big draw of Durango is the steam train ride. It was OK, but if you're taller than 5'6" the seating will be very uncomfortable.
The town itself is a tourist trap. Restaurants are average, prices high, and service poor. They know you came for the train, and won't be back.
Colorado is a beautiful state, but there are better choices there.

We had booked the train ride to Silverton. There was flooding/heavy rain during our trip. The train ride was canceled halfway through. The traffic at the train station was heavy. Be prepared to wait to get into the parking area. Otherwise, Durango and the Apple Orchard Inn were lovely.

We went on the Durango train and that is pretty much it. The train ride to Silverton was great. a bit long but good. Silverton was not what we expected. It was a stop to get food and gifts. No mining

Quaint town and the 11th street food court was really awesome.
We also went to the farmer's market on Saturday morning and walked along the river. We watched the train to Silverton roll by.

Durango was great. The riverwalk through the heart of town is great - watch out for bicycles though! If you drive 2-3 hours in any direction you can see some of the most beautiful places in the country. North into the San Juan Mountains, East through the mountains to Great Sand Dunes, West to Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyonlands, and Monument Valley, and South to Santa Fe.

Durango Tango was not so great. It was too far from town. Things that were promised were a drive away. Was locked out of room and had to jump through hoops to get back in. Washing machine not in working condition and ruined some clothing. As for the town we enjoyed. Everything closed down so early and that was a problem a few times. We had a great time on our tours.

Durango was the gateway to the Million Dollar Highway and the towns of Silverton and Ouray. It was a beautiful drive along the Million Dollar Highway, but could be anxiety provoking around the winding roads with no guard rails and a huge drop down the sides of mountains! Durango was also a nice town to stay if visiting Mesa Verde National park. I would have liked to spend more time to see the historic part of this town, but we were on a road trip schedule.

I stayed at Cascade Ski village (in Summer) and it was awesome. So gorgeous two level lodge for under $130. Surrounded by nature and easy to get to.The Silverton Durango RR also is a real adventure for $30 but a bit crowded in the viewing car, better in a seat. Durango has gone from being a poor dusty old cowboy town (like Silverton is) to a vastly yuppified outdoor mall like Boulder old town. Still, tshirts are cheap and there's a cool rooftop bar and burger joint (though kind of sunny). Nice cafe's too. The nature is fantastic though on the million dollar highway north, and if you want to drive that, its best from here to Ouray as you will be on the inside lane for the bone-chilling 10,000 foot dropoff at Red Canyon just south of Ouray a few miles. If you are a daredevil come the other way, south, along the cliff's rim without a guard rail. Take your heart pills before otherwise. LOL. Spectacular scenery. Anyway Durango has every franchise imaginable outside old town and a funky interesting RR museum at the depot which has many interesting cars, model trains, etc for the family. Have fun!

Lots of outdoor activities and the town is easy to navigate once you learn a few major streets. Plenty of restaurants to try, including my new favorite healthy place in town- Sage Farm Fresh. People are friendly. You can choose to relax or be active in beautiful surroundings, I did both along the River Walk. Also have the option to drive to other beautiful little towns like Silverton & Ouray or Telluride.

Beautiful small city. Well maintained with a variety of restaurants and small very interesting shops all along the side streets. The Durango-Silverton rail road was a major plus. The RR travels through the San Juan National Forest inaccessible to anyone not hiking there. Gorgeous landscapes and mountains with a stop in an old mining town, Silverton.
There is rafting and lots of hiking along with a miles long trail along the Animus river. It is near Mesa Verde, about 40 minutes away. Weather when we were there in late May was comfortable: 70's during the day and 40's during the night.

Durango is a located in a great part of Colorado. It has all the amenities I could want and still close to scenic vistas and historical content.Not that far from other recreational activities so it can operate as a jump-off point to those pursuits.

It was as I expected. I had booked before covid hit and had to cancel because of it. My main goal was the Durango to Silveton Steam train trip. It was AWESOME!
A must for anyone visitng the area. Also took a private UTV tour with Colorado Outback Adventures at Purgatory. Our guide Patrick was great! The trail was amazing! Would do it again if we return! The little shops in town were not "touristy". They were very nice. If I didn't have to take a plane back I would have purchased alot more. We only ate at 5 Resturants-Oscars...The Roost..James Ranch..Fire-Up Pizza.. and a bbq place. Oscars is an A one restuarant. Food, staff, atmosphere is absolutely welcoming and great!!! The Roost- I can't say enough about it! The food was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! -the atmosphere was low key and the staff was OUTSTANDING!!!. Always made us feel special! James Ranch was a very nice. Sitting outside was relaxing and the burgers were fresh and tasty. The young man who waited on us was very friendly. Fire-up Pizza was very good also! We liked the feeling of sitting outside although we werent- the pizza was very good and the staff again was friendly. The BBQ place was ok. Food was so-so but again staff was very nice.

Loved Durango and the old town. Didn’t spend enough time there to see a lot but the Durango to Silverton train ride was awesome, the museum there is fabulous and there are great places within an hour. Mesa Verde, Silverton to name a couple.

This is an old, historic and quirky hotel. We loved looking at all of the old pictures of Durango and learning about its history. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. What we experienced of the public areas was all good.
