Be sure and visit the John Steinbeck Center. Also, the Steinbeck House offers a lovely restaurant with a superb lunch menu. The restaurant is run (mostly) by volunteers working for a professional chef. If you eat there you will be supporting a very worthy cause -- the maintenance and programs of the Steinbeck House!
I didn't have the opportunity to explore much. It's was a very short business trip. I had a brief tour with a local real estate agent. It's an easy drive to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur and Pebble Beach from there. I was disturbed by the amount of homeless and mentally challenged people wandering in the streets. It was quite sad, really. I stopped to put gas in my rental car, and a Homeless gentleman was dancing in a very erratic manner around the cars. It was a dangerous situation, mostly for him. I was afraid he was going to be hit. I couldn't leave because he wouldn't move away from my vehicle. I guess I'm just not used to seeing that sort of thing in the frequency it exists there. They need a homeless shelter or something to help these people. It broke my heart to see so many in need. On the plus side, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, it is the salad bowl of the US afterall. Lots of great, beautiful scenery, trails for hiking, biking, etc. The Mediterranean climate is great! It reminded me a bit of the weather in Greece.
I only stayed in Salinas out of the need that it was close to where I was coming from and not wanting to drive any further but I would not recommend anybody to stay in Salinas drive 40 more minutes to Monterey and stay in a much better place
I am here for business, Salinas has been one of my favorite places for decades, I love having the chance to work in the area. I'm a Steinbeck fan & Salinas is Steinbeck country, great food, great people, great history.
Salinas is a lovely town and possesses many interesting points of interest. But, don't stay at Best Western if you want to enjoy your vacation. I think the manager was the role model for every zombie movie that's ever been made. He had the personality of fish that had been laying out and the son for 3 days.
