We stayed at Protea Cottage, which is well-equipped and comfortable. It's located at the end of the R600, near the entrance to Monk's Cowl area of the Drakensberg. You can access many nice trails directly from the cottage. The view from the porch is glorious, especially at sunset. Cathkin Park is a great location, and we easily filled our 6 days there. We went ziplining, hiking, swimming in the streams, horseback riding at uShaka, and saw the Falcon Ridge Bird of Prey show. We unfortunately missed whitewater rafting and the Boys Choir show. Leslie communicated thoroughly ahead of time about check-in and other details so there were no surprises. We also loved that it was off the grid, but with the solar panels, who noticed? The kitchen had all the necessary items, including a camp toaster and a French press for coffee. Lindsey and Brett don't live on site, but they stopped by a couple of times, and they were friendly and helpful. Their caretakers were there daily and kept everything in good order.

Bergview Estate is a private residential estate in the central Drakensberg. Good location for doing all the things one would want to do in the Berg. If you need a treat, Scrumpy Jacks for delicious honey cheesecake and Champagne Castle Hotel for scones and coffee/tea while you admire Cathkin Peak from the patio.

    We had an amazing stay!

We had an amazing stay! The location was perfect — close to great hikes, beautiful views and we even had zebras in the garden. Communication with the host was excellent: Kevin was super responsive and helpful throughout our stay. The place itself was very comfortable and well appointed - it felt like home away from home. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to others!

A lovely and quiet, beautifully maintained estate.

A lovely and quiet, beautifully maintained estate. The show at the Falcon Ridge Birds of Prey Centre in the area was amazing and well worth the visit - check times to be sure you visit them on the right days. We had dinner at Monks Cowl Country Club - the food was really nice and reasonably priced, but the service was lacking - maybe they were as exhausted as we were after a busy festive season - but waiters, although friendly, were not as on point as they should have been. Vallery bakery is always a great place to visit for brekkie or lunch and to pick up some fresh baked goodies - their chelsea buns are the best! Thokosiza and Cedarwood to me are a bit stale, and need some fresh, new and original retail. Waffles at the Waffle Hut were great (be aware that they add an automatic tip on your bill over if it is over R200 - a bit annoying), but again the retail side at Kwazulu Weavers was also a little disappointing. Overall we had a relaxed and comfortable stay, and will definately be back to chill for more than just 2 days next time.

A lovely cottage with magnificent views. Very clean, neat and tidy. Well kitted out and has solar so you don't even know when it is loadshedding . Will definitely be returning. Owners are wonderful and keep in touch. Highly, highly recomended.

View was great open plan lounge dining etc great and bar - although stuffed animals smelt. Cutlery, crockery, glasses etc were not clean - greasy and gritty. Dishwasher didn't wash properly either, needed to rewash by hand as we did on arrival. Sharp nails of carpet gripper exposed under frayed carpet injuring our three-year old child twice. Decking slat was broken which was hidden under a broken outside floor mat, which was stood on and caused injury. Monkey's a real problem, could not leave doors or windows open even if right there as they would come in or try to.

So peaceful and quiet! The cottage is simple but well equipped, with everything we needed. The Jetmaster fireplace is great. The location is fantastic- right at the top of Bergview Estate, with direct access to the reserve and walking trails from the garden. Drakensberg Sun Hotel is also very accessible. Anne was a fantastic host- extremely responsive to any queries.

Location, location location. Right next door to Drakensberg Sun but extremely private, You're living right next to the indigenous forest which you can admire from the front bedrooms, living and patio area. Complimentary wine and chocolate from Champagne Valley on your arrival. Unit has solar power, so load shedding is not a concern. Lovely fireplace and dishwasher!

Very beautiful location. Our moms wish was to see just a portion the Drakensberg Mountain Range. And she got just that. The house is gorgeous. Beautiful view overlooking the dam and with the backdrop of the mountains. Definitely value for money and have recommended we come back here again. Loved every moment of this weekend.
