Munich FAQ: Tips for every trip

Beyond Oktoberfest

Renowned for its stunning architecture and the world’s largest fair, Oktoberfest, Munich needs little introduction. Its vibrant cultural scene, great shopping and fantastic museums speak for themselves.

Munich has something for everyone: from historic palaces and castles, to stunning royal avenues to world class galleries and museums. Don't miss the new city hall in the heart of Marienplatz or the former residence of the Bavarian kings, the Residenz. Munich is also home to the world’s most famous beer hall, the Hofbräuhaus.

For great shopping, Karlsplatz is another commercial wonderland square that takes up much of the city centre and the upscale area around Maximilianstrasse. Munich is famous for its food too, so make sure you try the local Weißwurst, Leberkässemmeln and other popular pork dishes.

Thanks to efficient S-Bahn train, getting to the city centre from Germany’s second busiest airport, Munich International Airport is quick and easy. Whether you’re looking for luxury hotels, youth hostels or comfortable apartments, Booking.com has the perfect accommodation for your Munich visit.

Munich is a wonderful city and definitely worth visiting.

Munich is a wonderful city and definitely worth visiting. We particularly enjoyed the English Garden, the German Museum, and the fascinating Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism (NS-Dokumentationszentrum München), located in the Maxvorstadt district on Brienner Straße. Each offers a unique insight into the city's history, culture, and heritage, making them well worth a visit.

Coming from Vienna and Salzburg, I felt Munich was a let...

Coming from Vienna and Salzburg, I felt Munich was a let down. It felt soulless and industrial. It is unfair to compare two cities in two countries, but even the cathedrals felt small after wandering around St Stephens. It felt like no effort was given for beautification, only towards efficiency. The newer buildings lacked any ornamentation, no flower beds and little parks in unexpected places. The Englisher Garden to lacked as many flowers as I would like, perhaps due to its style. And I consider the biergarten in the Englisher Garden a total rip off. You can enter, but not leave without buying anything, and the things were overpriced, plus they claim the 0.5 litre beer is unavailable so you are forced to buy the 1 litre mugs. The only consolation I had was from the Alte Pinakothek where I got to stare at Van Gogh and Monet, but even there an unethical character by the name of Abdel who ripped us of 2 Euros by collecting our tiny backpacks and hanging them in the cloakroom instead of telling us there were free lockers for that purpose, needless to say he gave us no receipts for it. Neuschwanstein castle was lovely, but it is not technically Munich. I don't think I will be coming back again.

There is so much to see and do in Munich.

There is so much to see and do in Munich. I love trying different beers so loved all the variety of breweries and beer gardens. Loved the English Garden and strongly recommend renting a bike on the edge of the park and biking through it, although I will admit following the map was not always easy in the park. Watching the surfers on the river was great. We also went and spent a day at the Dachau Concentration camp that was powerful and to do it right you need a minimum of 3-4 hours. It was hot so bring sunblock and water. We also did the supper on the Ferris Wheel which was great, a little pricey, but a cool different experience. Food was great with plenty of choices although I found food prices a little pricier than in Canada but beer and wine was cheaper (alcohol was not cheaper). I was amazed how difficult it was to get water without paying for it, so bring a water bottle and fill up before you go. Great city, felt safe but did not stay out after 10 pm. Great city and I hope to visit again!

Munich is a unique city.

Munich is a unique city. A combination of city and tons of green space. There is so much to do and everything is accessible by transit, or foot. The castle Nymphenburg is within the city limits. Old City is so charming, and those buildings can be explored forever. The museums are top notch. The English garden, and West park, allow time to relax outdoors. There are endless great restaurants and cafes. Of course the people, and the Beer halls make the city so much fun!

Stunning & very aesthetic hotel! Wow! The room was modern and had all the necessities (including a washer/DRYER). The beds were extremely comfy and they supplied a great amount of pillows. Hotel offered other things we didn't end up using (heated pool, sauna, restaurant), wish we stayed in Munich longer so we could explore it more. Good location to public transport, less than 5min walk to Aidenbachstrabe station to take you into the city centre.

My 7 year-old loved the bunk bed! It’s very hard to find a hotel with a bunk bed over a double bed, perfect if you have a young child in the room with you. We were also able to watch the fireworks from our hotel window. Travelling from the hotel to Munich city centre was very easy since the U3 stops very close to the entrance.
