Just a few minutes’ walk from Fort Augustus on the edge of Loch Ness, this award-winning lodge offers four-star hostel accommodation with free Wi-Fi and free parking on site. Value was really good, especially considering we booked it in a short notice. Comfy beds, clean room, dog-friendly, lovely staff. A lot of communal spaces.

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. The location is just perfect (if you like remote, rural places), it's not only right on the banks of Loch Ness, it's also very close to a hiking trail. The atmosphere is just brilliant, there are various activities every evening, like a bonfire (with music and singing), beer pong, pub quiz and other fun things. I'm a bit gutted I couldn't go for a dip in the loch, but will make sure next time I do. Because of the remote location and the activities, you easily get to know other travellers, it's got to be one of the best places to make friends. You can buy food and drinks at the reception, so even without "going back to civilisation" you can easily survive here. The breakfast is basic, but very good. The staff - most of them were volunteers - was excellent. The whole place was spotless, every one was very friendly and helpful, and you could just tell that they loved to be there. This hostel has a heart and soul like few others. It is not only great value for money, it is also great value for your time.

Featuring free WiFi, a barbecue and a terrace, the hostel offers pet-friendly accommodation in Drumnadrochit, 2 km from Urquhart Castle and 22 km from Inverness. I liked that it was built into an old house so it was a good taste of what living in the highlands is like!
