Rated as being in the top 10 Bed and Breakfasts / Guesthouses in Australia in 2025 & 2023 by TripAdvisor. Built in 1872 by Reginald Wyndham from Wyndham Estate. It has been renovated to its 1872 glory providing the luxuries expected of a 21st century 5 star hotel set high on a ridge overlooking the Hunter River. We offer an experience of a boutique hotel, more than just a room. Close to Pokolbin - the main wine growing areas, wineries, concert venues (Bimbadgen Estate, Hope Estate and Roche Estate) and restaurants. We offer private transfers to and from all the local venues. In-house Catering Options (available by prior arrangement requiring a minimum number of 4 people): High Tea Discover the grandeur of a bygone era and the rural charm of the Hunter Valley with the revival of a traditional High Tea. Let the savoury finger sandwiches, dainty pastries, sweets and homemade scones, locally made preserves and a selection of fine teas and coffees take centre stage. A minimum number of four people required. Dinner served in our Victorian Dining Room Talk to us about your requirements and we will discuss with our chef to design a special dining experience. A minimum number of 4 people is required. Possible options ( menus and wines vary depending on the season and your dietary preferences ): 1. Something light – possibly an option for dinner on your first evening - a two course causal dinner created in our kitchen using homegrown vegetables and herbs to add to the meal. 2. The complete Victorian dining experience - enjoy the elegance of a by-gone era with all the crystal glassware,, silver cutlery, and linen napkins and tablecloth of the Victorian Era. Our grand 5 candle candelabra's finish the table setting to make the dinner a special occasion. The menu will be developed taking into consideration your dietary preferences and requirements whilst enjoying Hunter Valley wines to complement the food. Further information is available by contacting us.
We live at the Leconfield House having a separate area to our guests. Work continues to develop the 13 acres of garden, maintain the 150 year old property (built in 1872) and improve the facilities and services available to guests. We want your visit to Leconfield House to meet your needs and exceed your expectations. We will discuss with you the purpose of your visit to Leconfield House and the Hunter Valley and provide the services you require to ensure a memorable experience. The history of Leconfield House – built in 1872, one hundred and fifty years in 2022 It is a white two storey brick house, red corrugated iron roof, sandstone foundations from stone quarried near-by and hand-made bricks fired on the other side of Dalwood Road. The walls are solid brick walls with no cavity, some of the walls being 15 inches thick. The dampcourse is a layer of second-hand roof slate. The timber throughout is of cedar from the Hunter Valley. Down-stairs ceilings are 12 feet (3.6m) high and upstairs are 10 feet (3m), common of buildings of the period. The house is U shaped, built around a courtyard containing a domed shaped well of some 6000 gallons to catch rainwater and a cellar. The front of the house had a flagged floor supported by wooden pillars from which open louvered shuttered French doors. A lot of the fittings of Leconfield House have been replaced (as advised by various heritage advisors): • The leadlight on the front of the house is from the 1900’s, not installed when the house was built. • The staircase railing has been replaced. A house built in 1872 would have had a continuous balustrade. The existing railing also has modern finials added recently. The structure of the staircase is original – look at the wood and style in the cupboard under the stairs. • The cornices and ceiling roses have been replaced as houses of the 1870’s would have had simpler designs. Many of the cornices are the standard modern version.
Guests have free use of the sitting room (with it's fire lit during the cooler nights), the Grand Veranda (breakfast dining and a sun trap), the Dining Room (available for private dinners), the Front Terrace (a great place to enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the Hunter Valley - watch the life of a milking cow and enjoy the glow of Newcastle on the horizon) and the 13 acres that Leconfield House is located on.
