Company info

Little Red Hen Produce has operated a fresh market produce stall at Farm gate market currently located in Bathurst Street from july 2012. The quality of the vegetables and flowers is greatly determined by the rich alluvial river flats that exist on our property 'Rosendale" situated on the Derwent River just up stream from New Norfolk. The current focus has evolved so that we now grow just over a hectare of asparagus for sale at market and to a leading grocery chain in Hobart. Beginning in december 2017 we have now completed the re-building of our sandstone barn and woodshed into dedicated visitor accommodation. This is our second such endeavour as we also converted a cottage at "Cawood " , Ouse in the 1990's. Guests can expect a warm welcome from Annie and David with high quality produce provided as breakfast provisions featuring farm eggs from very free ranging hens in a self replacing flock. They will also enjoy a large spacious dwelling and surrounds and largely left to treat the property as their own. Annie and David

Property info

Uniquely situated on 30 has of asparagus and cattle farm the dwelling is set in secluded gardens dominated by English trees planted in the colonial era. Dwelling is recently reconstructed in sandstone and vertical board totally dedicated to visitor accommodation. We prefer a minimum night stay, as we think the property is a destination rather than a stopover, and guests need to allow time to appreciate the ambience and flavours of our home grown breakfast provisions and to allow the country experience to refresh! The situation is close to Hobart and all it has to offer but also a gateway to the south west and local icon sites at Salmon Ponds and Mount Field National Park. Highly rated local restaurants "The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery" and "Stefano Lubiana Wines & Osteria" are 5 and 20 minutes away respectively. The building features a barnyard and period facade with welcoming stable doors that allow full ventilation. The internal design is both modern and spacious with expansive glass areas that blend with the natural stone and timber. Large sliding doors on the western side allow full exposure to the garden and open onto a generous verandah with barbecue and outdoor setting.

Neighborhood info

New Norfolk was relatively early settled around 1807 and so features some lovely old buildings including the famous " Willow Court" precinct. There is a rich history to be discovered including the Norfolk Island immigration, the soldiery and the convict era, the later asylum period. Alongside this there is the paper mill at Boyer and its impact on the district and similarly with the hop industry. In recent times the town has seen a focus on antiques and now restaurants and wineries are flourishing. For day trips the are many options including of course Hobart (45 mins). Mona is 25 minutes away as is Mount Field National Park. The Salmon Ponds is 15 minutes by road and the Two Metre Tall brewery is 5 minutes away. There are a number of wineries close by,including at Meadowbank Glenora. There is an award winning gin and whisky distillery at Lawrenny, Ouse recently opened.
