When I arrived at Le Mermoz, I thought it was just going to be another house that we had rented from someone on this holiday. But when Omar walked down the stairs and welcomed me the way brothers welcome each other, the way fam does, it felt right, immediately.
As a writer with a specific focus on Europe’s Black communities, I often find myself in neighborhoods that people tend to divert, to tell the stories of my people. I try to purposely seek out Black establishments to eat and if possible, find Black owned accommodation to support. This time I hadn’t done that and allowed myself to be surprised. I was, pleasantly.
He was courteous, adjusted plans so we had the bigger room than the one we had initially rented. Then walked out with me to my car to help me drag my suitcases in, even while I insisted that it wasn’t necessary. It must be that Sene-Gambian friendliness that I encountered from his people before.
We had a wonderful stay, in a wonderful neighborhood at a wonderful host.

Nothing. It was just an accommodation without the basic needs because no hand wash, no hand towel, no almirahs, no place to keep luggage and belongings, no glasses, no drinking water. Just the breakfast was fine but there were lot of people waiting for coffee at the machine. Even the lifts were fully occupied, and one had to wait for the turn. Bed sheet was not properly washed and was just kept on the bed that the customer would come and do the room keeping itself.
