As featured in National Trust: Wild Escapes! Secluded, luxurious and quiet, the Skoolie Stays bus is nestled into a private spot in the glorious West Sussex countryside, with stunning views of the South Downs National Park. With easy access to beautiful villages, cosy pubs, heritage sites and excellent hiking and biking opportunities, the bus is the perfect balance of quirky escapism, off-grid living and classic Sussex experience. We converted the bus ourselves and worked hard to balance luxury, freedom and environmental impact with our project, creatively repurposing and using eco tech and sustainable suppliers to get the best and most unique finish with minimal impact on the planet. Our tiny home has: Master bedroom with a king-sized bed (sleeps 2) with storage for bags and wraparound windows. 43 square foot Sun Deck raised above the fields – perfect for morning coffees and late nights stargazing. ‘Murphy’ style fold away bunk-beds (sleeps 2 children or adults up to 6ft), cleverly-designed to fold-up during the day. Full kitchen with a double burner gas-stove top, fridge, large sink and plenty of storage and surface space. ‘American diner’ eating area, made from the original recycled bus-seats and a vintage teak school table. Bathroom with fully tiled shower and a top-of-the-range composting toilet (no smells and no wasted water, helping you reduce the impact of your weekend away on the natural environment). Cosy lounge with a clean-burning log stove and a comfy leather sofa. Plenty of USB electrical points – we have 2400W of solar power (plenty to charge your gadgets). Super-cool driver’s cab area with all the original buttons and levers. Firepit area - perfect for toasting s'mores! You will be warm, cosy and feel a million miles from everyday life!
We are Ruth & Guy and our bus adventure started long before we embarked on a tiny home in Sussex. In 2019 we decided we wanted to shake up our suburban lives. Already keen campervanners, we packed up the house, took the kids out of school and flew out to the States to travel across the country in a converted American school bus – a Skoolie to those in the know. We had an incredible year and loved living off-grid. It was a simpler way of existing that brought us all closer to nature, closer to each other and made us much happier as a result. It gave us a new perspective on life and we decided that when we returned, we would not only take this outlook with us, we’d also bring back a yellow school bus so that we could translate our experiences into a new beginning in the UK. We purchased a second hand bus in Florida and shipped it to the UK in February 2021. It took us 4 months to convert, a job we poured our hearts, souls and all of that American experience into. What sets us apart from others is our passion for the benefits of outdoor life; our dedication to sustainable, quirky design; the balance of comfort, luxury and off-grid living we provide and our choice of eco- materials. Guests tell us they are inspired by our journey and restored by their own off-grid adventures.
A rural bolthole, our private meadow offers easy access to the stunning South Downs Way as well as the cultural highlights and heritage of Brighton, Arundel and Amberly. Our private site in West Sussex is nestled just below the South Downs National Park, in a secluded spot surrounded by lush green fields, ancient woodland and rolling hills. It is the perfect space for a unique, off-grid experience. Whether you choose to hike or bike in the South Downs, picnic at the National Trust’s Warren Hill Park, tour Arundel Castle or play on the steam trains at Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, there is plenty to keep you busy. For those that want a lovely British pub, you will be pleased to hear that you are spoilt for choice. The closest pub, The White Lion, is approximately one mile away and can be reached by foot. This cosy spot was an original coaching inn, built in the 16th century. Thankfully the menu has moved on to a more modern fare with locally sourced, seasonal food, fantastic wines and usually a few real ales on tap. A little further away, in the village of Storrington (2 miles from the bus), there is a selection of bars and restaurants. We also love The Sportsman, with its lovely conservatory overlooking the stunning Amberley Wildbrooks Nature Reserve and The Black Horse, which is beautifully decorated with amazing fireplaces and a view into the kitchen. This is an area of great produce. You can walk to Kinsbrook Vineyard for lunch; tour Wiston Estate, or enjoy beers from Arundel or Greyhound brewery. The Village Larder, 3 miles away, has a deli shop that also delivers delicious hampers!
