Sandwich is one of the Cinque Ports (meaning “five ports” in Norman French) – a confederation of English Channel ports. Today, only Dover remains a significant port, but you will still find many original medieval buildings, including several listed public houses, churches and smock mills in Sandwich. Also, we know you’re thinking it… and you are correct. The town of Sandwich gives its name to the food thanks to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. As the story goes, he was playing cards and did not want to leave the table so asked for his serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread!
