Property info

On the northwest side of the harbor of the city of Chania, the Venetians built Revellino Del Porto, a fortification project to protect the harbor. Its construction began around the middle of the 16th century and was completed a few years before the fall of the city and its subsequent occupation by the Turks, in 1645. The castle is located at the northwest end of the Venetian harbor of Chania. In the case of siege, a thick chain would close the harbor, starting from Firkas and reaching the base of the lighthouse, at the other end of the entrance. Although the castle is Venetian, its current name is Turkish. The Venetians called the Castle “Revellino”. The Turks used it mainly as barracks, which in Turkish is called a “Firka”. Inside, the space was configured appropriately with buildings as barracks and warehouses for war material. The same building served as the seat of the Military Commander of the city. In the middle of the courtyard lies a large vaulted pool that served in collecting the rainwater of the roofs.

Neighborhood info

The northern side of Revellino is occupied by a complex of six consecutive domes, in which large cannon vaults (“Casemátes”) were found, one in each dome; designed in such a way so that the gunfire would cover the entrance of the harbor. The vault spaces were used as jail houses, from the years of the Ottoman domination to the years of the Greek Civil War. Upon the corner turret of the fort, on the 1st of December 1913, the flag representing the Union of Crete with Greece was symbolically raised.
