We loved the pool of this hotel, shaded with palm trees and jacarandas. The hotel is in a beautiful colonial style, with wooden floors and staircases. We were upgraded to a king room with 4 poster bed and sitting area.

Vientiane was enjoyable although the city streets are not very clean. We travelled around using Loca and they were very relaible. Our visit to the Victory Monument was a highlight for me, check that you go there when the musical fountains are on, they are stunning when viewed from the top of the Monument. The Supa is also a must see. We ate in the local Thai restaurants and the food was always great! The night market is a place for good buys and if you have children there is a lovely funfair at night.

When reached Lao they required a Visa.
When reached Lao they required a Visa. I was surprised as Vietnam did not ask for one. Then they charged 1800Baht for not having a photo.
13 hours to get there by the new train. No warning of photo or visa required by the Train authority.
I was ripped of often as I was told they accepted Baht they only gave change in Kip and Often they short changed me.
I think they should stop this train until they stop asking for Visa and if they insist on a photo they should have a photo machine taking Baht.
Horrible place and Nice streets but not French colonial at all as I had been told.
Do Not Go there it is the worse place I have have ever been.

Great to gain insights on real life in Lao, as a supplement to tourist-centred Luang Prabang.
Vientiane doesn't seem to have a centre, but Nam Phu Park is a key focus, and good to walk from there to the Presidential Palace (unfortunately under reconstruction), the Cathedral (ditto), Patuxai (not at all like Arc de Triomphe, truly Laotian), tourist info (great pictures, fab free map) and lots of Wats and restaurants (Doi Ka Noi and Soukvimarm Cuisine Lao being must-eat-ats).
Too far to walk, but well worth a tuktuk ride to Kaysone Phomvihan National Museum and his former home (round the corner on the ex-CIA plot where the Lao parliament sits today). Amazing insights on forging national Identity, culture and politics. Beware that lunchtime closing is strictly enforced at 12, and that there are no local restaurants, but Cafe 25 (between the two museums) is worth visiting too - an expensive but air-conditioned oasis.
Lao people welcoming and helpful throughout.

Fairly compact city, quite easy to walk around with good quality roads and sensible drivers. Having to use American dollars makes it quite expensive for Australians but manageable with caution. Tours are expensive. We found a very historic restaurant serving really great Lao food only a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel and on the same street. We ate there several times and were never disappointed. All the people we dealt with were quite friendly.

A surprisingly calm city with little traffic noise and polite and respectful drivers - no dodging and weaving through traffic, no horns blaring so we had a really relaxing, calm experience in Vientiane. There is lots to do and see.

Vientiane is starting out on its journey to become a popular tourist area - facilities are improving and what is there now works well. Modern hotels are in process of being built and transport infrastructure is developing - the China/Laos hi
gh-speed railway is certainly opening up this country.
Currently, mass tourism has not yet arrived (unlike many other places, where you seem to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with half the world's population).
If you want to go, go soon (but not in the wet season - wet is really wet!) - we can see that in a few year's time this lovely country could be overwhelmed with the evils of mass tourism, with hundreds of coaches queuing daily to get to the ancient cultural sites!
The location couldn't be better, it is centered and has many restaurants around. We had a room with the view on the back of the property, so it was calm, not sure about the other side, but anyways it's not a very noisy city. The rooms were simple, and the breakfast was good enough. We needed a good hotel to pass through on our way to other places in Laos, so it was perfect for that. The pool area is nice to chill.
We were meant to stay here only for one night but I got sick (no fault of the hotel) and had to stay longer. The hotel was great and allowed us to keep our room and helped us change our bus ticket. Really helpful.
Unfortunately we didn't realize breakfast was included and so missed out on that.
Bed was comfy for Laos standards, thankfully as I spent 2 full days on it.
The kindness of manager and staff , some speak French for very valuable informations !
Manager's enlightened advice who knows Laos and city (restaurants and massages).
Rooftop swimming pool with 360° city view of Vientiane
Downtown hotel position in Vientiane
Many restaurants nearby for local food and a French restaurant in front of the hotel !
Lovely old building with lots of character, comfortable room with good air conditioning (much needed as it was over 40C!) and friendly staff who were very helpful in arranging things for us. It was Laos new year while we there, and this felt like a sanctuary from the parties taking place across the city!
