Visit early-ish in the morning (before ten a.m.) or later in the evening to avoid the craziness (too many tourists, locals, bikes, donkeys etc.). If you´re not interested just ignore merchants trying to talk to you (they talk to you because they know it´s uncomfortable for us to ignore them). If you´re interested in something, start negotiating on one quarter of the price the merchant offers, then try to end up on one half of the price. The scarfs and t-shirts sold in the souks are quite nice! Be aware - a lot of the stuff sold seems to be made in Asia, so it doesn´t have to be made locally.
Amazing place you must visit once. The smells and sights can be overwhelming at first. You must haggle your price to avoid a scam, if they tell you a price half it! For example if they say 300dirham is a good price they really mean 100dirham OR less! Stick to a set price and you will get it in the end, keep smiling and be polite and you will receive that back . If you are a female in the souks be prepared for every stall holder to try and get you into their stall and speak to you, it is all part of the experience I paid 100dirham for a lantern, 40dirham For a tea glass and 100dirham for a teapot for reference!
The whole souk stinks of petrol fumes as there are motorbikes driving down even the smallest roads and alleys so prepare for it. Haggle for absolutely everything as the prices they will propose are absolutely ridiculous. It's a quirky place, so definitely worth going but there is more to Marrakesh than the souk.
Loved it. It''s neverending. Just be prepared to be approached by a seller at every stall. It's constant buy,buy , buy. There are lots of restaurants and cafes if you need to sit and take a breath. And make sure to haggle!!!
Great. Lots to see and experience. Like an Aladdin’s cave. Get a good map or download one onto your phone beforehand and give yourself time to get oriented (or get a local SIM card + some GB and use google maps) (Don’t ever admit to it being your first day In Marrakesh; always say you know where you are; don’t get fooled by someone saying the museum you are going to is closed etc,)! Enjoy the sights and sounds!
It takes time to adjust to the culture. Busy, hectic with all the donkeys, bikes and motorcycles and people trying to lead you to places for money. It is not a relaxing place to look around at you’re leisure...
