"This is a truly family run place. The halls are covered by pictures of the hotel, when the David's Grandfather (who sits at the reception desk and responds to the Bookings.com e-mails) started the business. David is a super nice fellow. He explained some of the old pictures taken at a time when there were no other buildings along the beach beside his grandfather's Hotel. Based on the Fiat 600s and the Renault Dauphines in front of the hotel (I wish they had a Renault Dauphine on display in the lobby so visitors from the USA could truly appreciate the era), I suspect that the main building was built in the 60s (as two story building) that was expanded to four floors as of today. Besides the family run feeling the dinner (9 Euros per person for three course stating with soup a light grilled chicken breast and ice cream plus a bottle of wine for two of us) was a steal by all means. The beach was great, but obviously a little bit cold. I suspect that no beach along the Atlantic is warm enough for hanging out in the water for too long, but it was probably still warmer than on the other side of the Atlantic around Portsmouth or Hampton, New Hampshire, USA."

The Colours of Nature

Bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the small Spanish region of Cantabria is known for undulating, lush landscapes which sharply rise to sheer peaks in the south-western Picos de Europa mountain range.

The capital Santander is an important port and has a long promenade lining its sandy beach. The coastline to the west is packed with Cantabria hotels on the beach, some of which are in Comillas. This small town has a number of interesting buildings, including Gaudí’s Capricho. West in the Oyambre National Park is San Vincente de la Barquera. Take to the water for spectacular views of this village, its impressive bridge and the often snow-capped mountains beyond.

At Suances to the east, green cliffs plunge to the sea, while nearby medieval Santillana del Mar is the closest town to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Altamira cave paintings. Another medieval jewel is inland Potes whose cobbled streets and stone bridge over a stream are all in the shade of the Cantabrian mountains. In the east of the region, the rocks at Noja descend into crystal-clear waters, while Laredo’s curving bay ends in a hill that offers lovely views.

Whether you opt for one of the luxury hotels in Cantabria, an apartment or guest house, Booking.com has a great range of choice.
