My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! We loved the room design and the overall style of the property. The location was also very convenient, making it easy to reach the city center. What truly made the experience exceptional was the staff—they were outstanding. They made us feel so welcome, took the time to explain the best places to visit, and even helped with restaurant bookings and recommendations. Whatever we needed, they were always ready to assist with a smile. Truly amazing!

We had an amazing stay! The staff were exceptionally friendly and always eager to assist, even helping us park our car in the car park. The car park stood out for being safe and clean, especially compared to the surrounding options. Our room was spotless and spacious, with a lovely shower and a comfortable bed. The rooftop bar was another highlight. Overall, it was a truly enjoyable and memorable experience!

FAQs about hotels in Norte Region

The Essence of Portugal

With fabulous beaches stretching from Caminha by the Spanish border to just south of Espinho, Portugal’s Norte region is known for beautiful scenery and historic cities.

Most Norte hotels on Booking.com are in its UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital Porto (or Oporto). Attractively spread over hills, it has wine cellars storing port from the Douro River Valley vineyards upstream.

Voted one of Portugal’s most liveable cities, Vila Real has the Mateus house overlooking a peaceful pond. Guimarães boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre and is known as the ‘birthplace of the Portugal’. Its stately castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança are well worth a visit.

Bragança itself is by Montesinho Natural Park in north-east Norte, and a keep remains from its former castle. Chaves also has a castle keep and a Roman stone bridge, but unlike Braga, it no longer has remains of its Roman baths, erected over hot springs. Braga’s crowning glory is the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, set high in hills, with a wonderful staircase and garden overlooking the city.

South of Galicia is the beautiful Peneda-Gerês area, Portugal’s only national park, and to its west is Viana do Castelo with its Norte beach hotels set on Blue Flag beaches. Also noteworthy is impressive Basilica de Santa Luzia, surveying the riverfront town below.

People are very nice and helpful. We arrived in the middle of the night (around 03:45) due to flight trouble and they left us instructions for pick-up of keys. We really appreciated the offered solutions. Thanks Ernani. Our luggage arrived 2 days later and they received them on our absence. Perfect! There are around 10 or 12 small bungalows, arranged internally like apartments, with terraces and outrageous views over the valley. There are modern kitchen equipment, with induction hearth, stove, dish washer and also some pans. If you are a cook you will miss some pans and additional equipment like mixers, but for usual cooking it is sufficient. There is a heated internal pool, very nice as we stayed 5 days in autumn and had a lot of rain, wind and low temperatures. Head caps are required and can be bought on reception for 4 € each. We had our breakfast included. During the days where there were enough guests, rich and varied options were available. As people got reduced, they asked us at night before to choose food from a menu. No desperdice. Perfect! We didn't eat at restaurant, but it smelled very well during the initial days and they offer some nice combinations at a relatively high price level (this seems to be inherent to the region), but we are not really enabled to evaluate this point. Rooms were clean on arrival. In bathroom there is a heating device which allows hanging and drying of bath towels. Very nice as this small detail is often neglected at hotels. As the bungalows are placed on a steep hill, it is adequate more for a bit sporty people. Access by road is also steep but asphalted and reachable by standard vehicles. We are planning to return to Peneda-Gerês (under better weather conditions) and would certainly consider to stay at Pousadela again.

Excellent! A wonderful hotel right on the banks of the Douro River. The suits are comfortable and well equipped. We were looked after by the very friendly staff - Carla, Tamiä, Silvia and the kitchen staff. Always a smile and very helpful. The hotel has been designed in a very tastefully manner and with greatest love for detail. Just beautiful! The breakfast buffet had a wide selection of freshly prepared foods and is very beautifully decorated. The picnic basket is a must! A wonderful place to unwind, relax and enjoy. We will definitely visit again. Tamaris and Silvio Bertschinger from Switzerland

A true paradise in the nature, in a super stylish cabins, and most amazing hosts. Every detail warmed the heart, you enter the bungalow and bottle of whine with a cake is waiting for you, 10minutes after it stars raining, hosts nocks at your doors with sturdy umbrellas. We were extremely unlucky with a weather, but cabin was so beautiful, surrounded by the wonderful nature, local cat visited us and stayed with us for the whole night and we used inside pool with an amazing view to the hills, so we were not even sorry that we couldn’t get outside for 3days:)

Cidalia and Déri are excellent hosts. The location of the Quinta is outstanding with a stunning view over the River Douro. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night but I got a completely self-made dinner and breakfast. Déri is also a great cook and prepares most of the food from local resources, from handmade croquettes over sausages, almond cake, et cetera. I really hope to visit the Quinta again someday. Its a great city to visit over a long weekend - lots to offer if you are interested in sightseeing, wine/port, architecture and history. It is hilly and there are steep streets if you want to get to and from different areas - we didn't use the taxis or old cabs but these would help if you have mobility issues. We visited Fonseca port house in Gaia, took a wine tour that included a wine tasting and a short river cruise that took 6-7 hours - this was the ideal length for us.

Excellent accommodation with 20 - minute walk into town centre. Charming old town with variety of restaurants, bars and cafes. The hospital ship moored in the harbour had a fascinating history as well as very interesting to explore. The Saint Luzia Church on the hill was beautiful and provided some amazing views across the city, river, and the sandy beaches to the South. Friendly local people and some good quality restaurants.

This is a beautiful neighborhood with small markets, restaurants (Try the Reál and the Paodimia Bakery across the street) - at the end of Rua de Republica is the Jardim de Morro park where locals gather in the evening to watch the sunset - a tradition of "saying goodbye to the day" and the walking bridge over to Porto! Take the road down here to reach the port houses, the open-air market stalls, lots of restos and DON'T MISS: Cais do Fado! Take in this intimate musical venue to hear the historical music of Portugal! Ask for Paula or Iris! Overall, Vila Nova de Gaia is a very convenient, friendly area...just bring comfy walking shoes and you'll be fine!

It was compact and easy to get around, it is historic and religious so lots of cathedrals and churches to visit. It was the festival of Sao Joao while we were there so there were parades through the streets which was interesting. There are plenty of bars and restaurants. The public transport is really good and a must visit is Bom Jesus do Monte which is a short bus journey away. If you like craft beer a visit to Letraria and Mal Amado are well worth it. We found all the people in Braga to be very friendly.

Esposende is the perfect place from where to explore northwestern Portugal. It's a quite town that offers all the necessary services. Many beaches nearby. Ofir beach south of the river is our favorite, but there are many beaches north of Esposende as well, with paths along the dunes and the pine forests. The local cuisine is wonderful, the sushi and pizza places were horrible.
