Nice and quiet historical city to visit in 1 or 2 days. If the weather is fine, walk down from the mountain Penha (you can go up by teleferic). Visit the castle and the city centre. Go and eat at TAVERNA TROVADOR.
We walked around Guimares for the afternoon. Unfortunately it was raining so the streets were quite empty and we didn't take our time to enjoy the old city centre. What we 've seen - the castle, the palace, the big market space in front of the church - very all easy to reach and worth a visit. Especially as the start of a independent Portugal it's great to stop by on your way. The next day we drove up the mountain and had a look on Guimares which was definitely amazing!
I visit this city once or twice a year. The historic centre is so beautiful, the overall architecture is amazing. I love using the cable car to go up the hill of Penha and walk around the boulders and watch the amazing view of the city and the mountains around it.
Plenty of history here and in the surrounding area. The Proto- historic site, Citania de Briteiris, is close by (though a hire car is the easiest way to get to it) and any history or archaeology buff should not miss it.
Very small historic area but very attractive. Hotel out of the old part but easy to get to by car with parking close by Hotel very peaceful some beautiful rooms with old stone and tiled features. Stone terrace overlooking city great to watch sun go down. Lovely gardens

Both apartments were lovely decorated, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bedrooms were very spacious and the kitchen was perfectly equipped to have breakfast or a light meal. In a central location to visit Guimarães. The hosts were really nice and helpful, they also brought us a homemade lemon cake one of the evenings. Pin code to get into the apartments made it very convenient to check-in. We would definitely stay again. We had a great stay in both apartments.

Hotel da Oliveira is in the heart of historic Guimares near Largo de Oliveira. With pedestrian access only, it is wonderful to walk through a labyrinth of laneways and fabulous squares back to this accommodation. The hotel offers free secure parking a short distance away. The rooms are modern, beds comfortable and smorgasbord breakfast good. Hotel da Oliveira is a must if you want to be in the thick of medieval Guimarães.

A lot of space in the room, everything very clean and confortable. Amazing location and the best staff ever! I was in Guimarães working and I had to spend my birthday there, by myself. When I get to the hotel there was a lovely gift: a rose with a cute birthday card. I loved it. Thank you so much! I totally recomend it. A special thanks to Lisandra that received me in the hotel and was so kind.

Absolutely beautiful! Loved everything about this beautiful Pousada! We stayed in the older section and every step going to our room was like living in the set of Downton Abbey. The grounds are as unique as the church and former monastery. We walked into town and back. Free parking right at the entrance. The bar and dining rooms are elegant and inviting. Don’t miss this gem in Portugal!!!

The cabins are great - the beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms have all the mod cons. We stayed in one of the green ones. The air con is powerful, but in fact we just turned it off and opened the doors onto the back yard and the balcony. The decor is minimalistic, and the walls have been left bare and are made of chip board. It's quite a nice effect, although probably for only a weekend! The breakfast was also a good continental buffet - a really good choice of pastries/bread/cheese/ham/cereals/fruits etc. We loved the spa - it was really lovely, with a great steam room, and the jacuzzi is wonderful. It is a great place to go for a relaxing weekend!
