I received a very friendly welcome and I really liked my big room at the top of the stairs on one side. The room was big with sloping ceilings which just added to the character. The bathroom was huge. It had great views over the river and marsh. Breakfast was excellent. It was nice to choose the hot food the night before and then be greeted with a lot of continental selections. There was also a great view outside the hotel with several benches. I really liked how quiet this hotel was after being in London for several nights.

The rooms were great on the larger size with fabulous views over the Gardens . Great facilities with good parking. Even placing a reserved sign on the disabled parking for my Mum. Lovely personal touch. The ambience. I feel the hotel may have been refurbished in recent years. Great decor throughout. Wellness & Spa Centre, looked very good. Unfortunately I didn’t get the opportunity to use on this stay. Will definitely return to this hotel again .

We had a wonderful stay – the room and bathroom were spotless, breakfast was delicious and the hosts were incredibly kind and helpful. I injured myself on the first day and they supported me in such a caring way that we were able to continue our journey without any problems. We felt very well taken care of and can highly recommend this place!

Parking is an issue in the area due to permit requirements. You can arrange with hotel in advance and this would be nice to know. We couldn’t get breakfast as we had to leave early for flight and the guys organised a takeaway bag with sandwiches and fruit. Life saver!

A lovely historic town but probably best to visit out of season otherwise we can imagine hoardes of Tourists (like us) in the popluar streets. Winchelsea, down the road a bit was worth a visit if you like historic buildings. Spike Milligan is buried in the chuchyard

There's plenty to see and walks near the town.

There's plenty to see and walks near the town. Large selection of shops too, the usual chains but also smaller independent shops. Several hotels with a range of prices. I object to seeing the resident pigeons chased and frightened by uncaring children. You get this everywhere, I know, but they are wildlife and therefore protected.

Lovely village, lively pub, good beer (Harveys) & food in bar on, friendly bar staff, comfy bed, effective shower. Note: breakfast is from 9am (useless to business travellers). Fire door issue which meant I had to climb out of a window must have been fixed by now? Detailed issue: After a 05:30 start and all day workshop I was tired on arrival so neglected to ask the time of breakfast (mentioned on your website and Booking.com). Greeter mentioned if I came in after 11pm I'd need to use the key to get in via rear door. I had a meeting in East Grinsted at 9am so came down for breakfast at about 8am. Locked grill to bar and kitchen. Rear door "push bar to open" grey handle wouldn't push down to unlock. I tried it a couple of times with the flat of my hand. I ended up climbing out of a window onto the flat roof and onto the fire escape wooden steps. Headed into town and grabbed a McDonalds before my all day meeting (not the 'Full English' I'd been looking forward to!). Perhaps other guests are overhung tourists with a leisurely schedule who find 9am is a good time? What if there had been a fire? What if I'd been disabled or a short 8st woman?

Excellent location steeped in history. The Abbey is simply stunning and you feel like you have stepped back in time. I highly recommend the Chequers Inn for accommodation and food and drink. It is a friendly place where the locals make you feel very welcome and it’s very easy to get around. I wish I had found Battle years ago and I cannot wait to return.
