Portariá

Mountain Village, Hiking, Unique Architecture

One of 807 reviews:
"Very beautiful traditional Greek mountain village with small shops (local products) and few restaurants. Difficult to find parking in the center of the village, one public parking but it's very small. Easy to make road trips around Pelion area - go around if you have a car, this is one of the most beautiful regions in Greece (also in summer, not only winter). Some part of the roads (in Pelion area, not in Portaria) were destroyed in winter 2024 during storms. Unfortunately, they were still destroyed in July 2024. You can go around by car, roads are not closed, but needs a bit attention in many places and wouldn't recommend to drive at night (dark). Time from Portaria to beach (Agios Ioannis, Papa Nero) took from us abt 40 min so take your time. To Village "Kala Nera" (nice beach, long with plenty of place in July) a bit less."

One of 283 reviews:
"It's so beautiful. I walked every day in the local area and all of the restaurants provided great food and amazingly friendly and helpful service. I would strongly recommend this area, but I'm so glad that's pretty undiscovered and unspoilt. The surrounding villages and scenery are amazing and you get a pick of great beaches everywhere - my personal favourite was Damouchari for it's chilled out vibe and there's a beautiful walk from Tsagarada to get there."

"I would recommend staying i Makrinitsa for just a few days. If you wanna travel to places close by then it is a beautiful place to stay at. It can though be difficult going to places if you are not used to travel by car at these kind of small roads. Makrinitsa is small enough and 1-2 days may be enough."

Zagora

Mountain Village, Mountain Trails, Culinary Heritage
52 hotels
One of 152 reviews:
"Zagora is a lovely village, however, due to its location far away from Volos, as well as its harsh history during the years of the Turkish occupation, it is less 'touristy' and certainly not as picturesque as some of the other villages of the Pelion. There is definitely a 'ruggedness' to the village. I would recommend visiting Zagora for a day or two, and certainly seeing the library, the Ellinomuseio, and the four churches (Agia Paraskevi, Agua Kiriaki, Agios Georgios, Sotira). In the summer, it is also worth visiting Chorefto beach. The best months to visit Zagora weather-wise are from May to September. I visited for two weeks in late October - the average high was about 12°C and while it didn't rain it was cloudy 95% of the time."

"This village looks like a fairytale. It's ideal for seeing the beautiful architecture of Pelion houses without overcrowded. Delicious food in the square of the village can be found and also cozy bars. ( We ate at "Giorgaras" flavoured dishes and visited again and again "Erodion" for drinks) Don't forget to visit the store with homemade cookies, marmalades, honey, and much more, made by local women."

Pros: Amazing traditional stone house turned into an inn. Blends perfectly with the surrounding nature and folk aesthetic. Little waterfall adds to the ambiance. Everything The property is very well organized We received a very warm welcome at the midnight and the room was so comfortable and had best view. The shower had very strong pressure and the Internet was good. Konstantinos ans his mother were so nice and kind as well as the housekeeping lady with beautiful smile. Volos is a wonderful city that I really enjoy visiting.

Volos is a wonderful city that I really enjoy visiting. The long promenade along the sea, with green parks on the other side, is perfect for walking and enjoying the atmosphere of the city. The small streets are full of restaurants, cafés, bakeries and pastry shops – some of them so beautifully presented that they look almost like little art galleries. Volos is also a perfect starting point for exploring the entire Pelion region, combining a beautiful mountain landscape, traditional villages and some truly wonderful beaches. A great destination where you can enjoy the city, the sea and the mountains all in one trip.

Agios Ioannis is a wonderful destination for beach and nature lovers who are travelling by car and looking for an authentic holiday experience in Greece. There were very few tourists from Western Europe, but all the more from Greece itself. The mountain villages of Tsagkarada, Zagora and Makrinitsa are nearby, and there are countless beaches (including the highly recommended Plaka Beach). However, you absolutely need a car to get around. Travelling by bus via Volos isn’t easy, as there are only a few bus services a day. The range of dining options in Agios Ioannis was excellent and the food was fantastic.

It is a nice place.

It is a nice place. A bit far and not so easy to reach, but definitely worth of visiting. There is a long public beach of about 2 km of length and a nudist beach (Parisena's) of about 400 meters, so there is a place for everyone. The restaurants are good, but tricky: the waiters are bringing you unwanted stuff like bottled water, bread, which aren't included into the price of the meal you order and the bills are not detailed, so you have the feeling of being cheated. Chorefto is nice for long evening walks, and you also have hiking trails alongside the sea. There's a lot of stray dogs, cats and mosquitoes (so take a repellent with you!).

The village may look small, but it has everything you need – supermarkets, souvenir shops, cozy restaurants and cafés, a bakery, a children’s playground, and a newly renovated church. From here, you can enjoy a walk along the promenade to Kato Gatzea or Koropi. A short 10-minute drive takes you up into the mountains to the beautiful villages of Vizitsa and Milies. In the other direction, you can visit the Voliotis family olive mill or head to Ano Lechonia to catch the little train for a picturesque ride through the mountains.

Tsagarada is a quaint little village near Mount Pelion, surrounded by stunning natural scenery. The area is absolutely gorgeous, with plenty of greenery, peaceful views and a very traditional atmosphere. It is a beautiful place to visit, especially for anyone who enjoys nature and quiet surroundings. However, visitors should be prepared for constantly travelling up and down the mountains, as the area is very hilly and spread out. I would definitely recommend renting a car, since getting around without one can be very difficult and public transport is extremely limited. Overall, Tsagarada is well worth visiting, but having your own transport makes the experience much easier and more enjoyable.

Mouresi is a beautiful village close to the nicest beaches in Pelion. I loved walking around it and spending time in the local Vaggelis tavern with amazing food and drinks. It is very close to the coast yet it's a little bit uphill so it is fresher and easier to sleep at night. There are fun hiking trails going through Mouresi that connect it with beaches in Damouchari and Agios Ioannis.

it’s one of those places that feels authentically Greek without being overcrowded. What makes it special is the combination of: a lush mountain setting from the Pelion peninsula, calm turquoise beaches, traditional stone houses and olive groves, and a relaxed waterfront lined with tavernas and cafés. It’s also tied to Greek mythology — according to legend, Jason and the Argonauts stopped there for water before their voyage for the Golden Fleece. it’s a great base for exploring the rest of Pelion, including villages like Milies and the famous Pelion mountain railway.

Quiet village in first week of July. We stayed for 5 nights and that was just right to be able to relax and see the west coast of Pelion. Small shop in village stocks essentials. 2 tavernas and one cafe by the beach - all very good quality and recommended.

Very small village far from any other place in Pilio.

Very small village far from any other place in Pilio. The round is very heavy and if you want to come up somewhere else for a walk, you need to count on, at least, 30 minutes driving to the nearest village in one direction (for example, Milina). There are only 4 restaurants and 2 cafes and that's it. You have 200m of road for an evening walk. So, it can be very boring.
