The view, the view, the view. Plus, the hotel was very elegant. Extra bonus is the hydrofoil boat that docks outside the hotel that takes you to and from Itsukushima Island. The hotel was the site of the G7 conference in 2023, with lots of photos documenting the summit. The hotel is also used for weddings, and we got to watch the end of a lovely wedding, with the new bride and groom walking up a three-story circular stairway, while the wedding guests applauded the couple from the balconies overlooking the three-story central grand lobby. Just lovely.

Excrllent place to stay. JR and bus station is close, a nice cafe just next door, and the castle/garden or city museum can be reached with a 25-30mins walk. The room was larger than expected, so was the bathroom. We stayed many hotels in our weeks in Japan, but this was the best in its price range. Comfy bed, fresh towels every day - and it was quiet despite facing a busy street. Department store nearby and restaurant as well. All in all, I would love to stay here again - highly recommended. We stayed on the 2nd floor, facing the street.

Good location, it is a 5-minute walk from the bus stop. The area around the hotel is quiet, there is no noise from cars, and there are not many people around. The room has a good bed and sheets with free pajamas. There is a good selection of amenities. Everything was clean. On the top floor, there is a public bath with a sauna, with several baths and one of them outdoors. Perfect place to finish your busy day and relax.

We appreciated the location, being in the heart of Hiroshima. We had Imperial Palace view and Art Museum view. Needless to mention the cleanliness, the perks and the kindness of the personnel. It was really lovely. We stayed there in 2009, as a couple, and we had already high expectations, going with children, which were met now, too.

One day in Hiroshima is enough, in order to feel the vibe of the city and visit the most important sites: Hiroshima Castle, A Bomb monument building and museum, Art Museum, Aquarium, Hondori Shopping and Nightlife district are all at walking distance (within 1km radius). If, however, a second day is available (and some means of transportation) Itsukushima Island is a must and Mitaki-dera Pagoda is a very nice place.

Okayama is a quieter town than other Japanese cities.

Okayama is a quieter town than other Japanese cities. Visited willow canal at Kurashiki by train, half an hour away. Also took the street car ( tram) to Koraken gardens. As our visit was January not many flowers out, but a big garden to walk around.

Only spent one day at the end of our trip which was enough to basically shop and wander the historical area which I think is the main attraction anyway. Beautiful, scenic, clean, historic. And we loved Yoshii Ryokan in the heart of it all. Definitely worth a visit.

Matsue castle is one of my favourites.

Matsue castle is one of my favourites. We enjoyed walking around the castle area too. Prices in Matsue are reasonable. It is a beautiful city and the people are friendly. The sunset over Shinji lake is unbeatable.

Tottori is the Sand Museum (closes January 5, the sculptors, real world wide artists) come in, the Museum opens for Japanese Golden week. We have been going there every year, since 2013. Always staying at the APA hotel, Ekimai.

Better to stay in a hotel than in the Guest House.

Better to stay in a hotel than in the Guest House. There is much to see on the island and it is very popular with locals. The tram takes you right there from the Hiroshima Station. A wonderful opportunity to buy local arts and crafts. The Miyajima Base Restuarant near the guest house had a totally gluten-free menu so all the deep fried food could be enjoyed by everyone. The rope-way experience in the snow was something exceptional.

The town itself is nice but not too special.

The town itself is nice but not too special. Plenty of good places to eat and many shops, but the main attraction is the startof the Shimanami Kaido bike route of course, it is gorgeous and highly recommended!

Silent small town, just next to the station you have castle, not that frequently operating local trains from this station. To reach Hiroshima I had to take a bus and could not find local trains. Shinkansen is available, so those who dont worry about Shinkansen prices then it is super easy.

A very pretty modern city.

A very pretty modern city. Definitely worth a visit, we were unable to visit the Peace Museum as it was closed during our time. A day trip to Miyajima Island is definitely a highlight. Things are a bit more expensive than other parts of Japan. Highly recommend to add to your travel diary.

It isn’t a typical tourist destination from my understanding but the gardens by night are absolutely stunning. The casual is also beautiful and I’m sad to have missed the pottery class. Food and bars also exceptional - everybody is particularly friendly, and perhaps less used to accommodating tourists. Coffee: Empire coffee roasters. Friendly service and outstanding coffee. Food: Hidaya Yanigamachi. Grill your own delicious meat. Drink: ichigin. Super friendly and will involve you in conversations even if you don’t speak Japanese.
