The best hostel experience I've ever had. -The shared bathrooms were so clean and had everything you need (shampoo, conditioner, hairdrier, towels) They were also so roomy and pretty. -The staff was so welcoming and helpful! Since my room was right next to the air purifyer (which was kinda loud during the night) I kindly asked them if they could put it on silent mode and she was so understanding and did so! - I stayed for two nights and I was provided with a new set of towels, pyjamas and slippers. Also when returning from a long day at Naoshima it's so nice to come back to a cleaned room:D - The hotel is also not even 5 mins away from the ferries and the main station. Very convenient for sure:)!!! -They also give you a free pass to use their onsen and in the shared kitchen there's tea, snacks, and water. So comfy.

This was certainly one of our best hotel experiences in Japan! Upgraded our room to the suite when we were there- because the courtyard was so beautiful. For design lovers, the attention to detail was immaculate and such an inspiration. The balance of traditional architecture and modern design was breathtaking. Opened only 6 months ago! What a gem. Breakfast was delicious and healthy. We got Japanese breakfasts on both mornings instead of the Western. To get there, we took a bus from Kurashiki station to a bus stop 3-5 mins walk to Yoruya.

Right in the middle of Bikan district. Perfect to explore the area. The room is actually a suite with a kitchen area, has a washer/dryer inside. It could work perfectly for a family with two or even three small children thanks to the couch/sofa bed. There is a breakfast restaurant in the first floor and a small 6 seat sake bar (not loud at all). The staff was super welcoming and helpful with local recommendations.

The first thing I realised when I entered the hotel was the smell, it was so nice and calming. The room was amazing. It was spacious, had a huge bed and even a window seating area. The view was decent from higher floor too. On the top floor, there was even a spa area, which was free for all guests! It has a sauna, an indoor and an outdoor bath. There were also vending machines and laundry machines on that floor. Of course, the room also had a toilet and bath. Bus and tram stops are just a few minutes away. The price was very affordable too, especially compared to other big cities.

The location is within walking distance from the Peace memorial. Room was good and the bathroom very spacious. The best feature of the hotel being the 3rd floor terrace where you can have a drink or just relax, there are even free drinks. We loved our time there and especially the coffee shop down stairs.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Dormy Inn which was very comfortable and close to everything we wanted to see in Hiroshima. The staff were welcoming, the onsen ( and post onsen ice creams) were easy to access, restaurants were close by and the shuttle to the station at the end of the trip was a bonus.

I wish I'd had more time.

I wish I'd had more time. I could've spent a whole day/ night on Miyajima. I took the ferry from Memorial park round trip, but it's a very small and completely enclosed boat, which doesn't give you a taste of the sea breeze and all the views are through a window. I would take the other ferry at least one way in the future. Memorial Park and museum can consume most of a day. It's heavy. Plan for some time afterwards to reflect and recuperate, but then enjoy the beautiful city that has sprung from the tragedy. I arrived too late to do anything on my first day so I just walked around my hotel neighborhood. The second day I visited the park, Miyajima, and the market, and left too early to do anything on the 3rd day. I didn't even have enough time to see the castle. If you arrive earlier in the day or leave late, 2 nights could be enough. It was also too hot to rush around so cooler temps might make a big difference in what you can do in a day.

Okayama is a great stop-over and a good launch point to Naoshima Island. The locals are friendly and good humoured, and restaurants didn't mind a couple of bumbling westerners in there bars and cafes. I enjoyed it immensely.

Two nights is enough. Historical centre is very small. Okayama train station is amazing - you will probably transit through there - the best food areas. However, what we enjoyed the most during our stay was a guided bike tour we did. It was two stops on the local train from Kurashiki - about 10 minutes. The guide was amazing and spoke great English. We saw places we would never have encountered. A real experience that I highly recommend. https://araki-rent-a-cycle.jimdofree.com/guided-tour/

Tottori is a great city!

Tottori is a great city! I think you may need a car to get the most out of it, but there are many beautiful places to visit and it's not very expensive when compared to major Japanese cities. The sand dunes are well known, but Lake Koyama is also gorgeous and has a lovely garden and park on the east side. There are also many places to see cherry blossoms in spring, like Yamata Sports Park. I also think the city center has some great locations. It's a little small, but there is a public zoo in the middle of the city near the station that has a friendly Cockateel named Kibatan. Say hello to him! There is also a burger shop nearby called Banbi that has the best burgers in Japan, in my opinion. Check it out if you have time!

Onomichi is a small coastal town in Japan that is great for a day trip. The town is very walkable, and there are a wide variety of restaurants and shops you can explore. Taking the ropeway up and walking down the mountainside has great views. If you are in the Hiroshima prefecture, it is worth stopping by.

Silent small town, just next to the station you have castle, not that frequently operating local trains from this station. To reach Hiroshima I had to take a bus and could not find local trains. Shinkansen is available, so those who dont worry about Shinkansen prices then it is super easy.

A thought provoking trip through history.

A thought provoking trip through history. Very powerful story telling in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Very clowded. Would recommend an audio guide as there wasn’t space to read the information in some areas - mid summer holidays visit. Walk the river in the early morning. The little restaurants in lanes are also a way to find good food in the evenings.

Okayama is a bigger city than I expected and I got lost trying to find my way out of the train station. There is a lot to see in Okayama itself, e.g. the magnificent Korakuen gardens, but it's also a handy place to stay for side trips, e.g. to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island, or Naoshima.
