Very beautiful even when there is not much snow left. It must be great in January and February when it snows heavily. A private stay in the middle of the forest and mountain. Very beutiful view!!! Very well equipped accomodation which makes our stay easy and comfortable. The old men (staff) are very helpful and caring.

We (couple) stayed at Hotel Wohnen over Christmas for 6 nights and loved it. Breakfast included 1 hot plate every morning, plus you were able to help yourself to cereals/coffee/toast/juice. There is a restaurant on site for dinner (we didn’t go, but seemed very popular). Our room was clean, with a very comfy bed perfect for after big days out skiing. There are multiple shuttle buses within a very short distant walk of the accomodation, plus, maps on the wall to clearly show you where they are. There is a private sauna and onsen to book into every arvo/night for free (just write your room number in next to what time you wanted every day). It’s a street or two away from the main Echoland street - easy to walk to, and loved Echoland location for a range of rental hire/range of restaurants. Laundry and ski drying room as well. Very easy holiday, we wished we stayed longer.

Everything! The trailer/cabin we stayed in was beautiful, always warm, amazing view. The service was absolutely lovely, we felt bad we couldn't speak more Japanese as it would have been nice to be able to hold conversations. The owner, and the staff were all so hospitable. Would 10/10 recommend and we will definitely be staying here again on our return!

Exceptional location, 20 meters from lifts. Away from the pubs and tourists frenzy of Happo but easily within reach if that’s what you’re after. World’s best Onsen facilities, awesome smorgasbord breakfast and dinner. Guest locker facilities are perfect and MYO lunch pizzas with beers is a must. Rooms are older and simple but clean with everything you need. It’s not advertised as a 5 star penthouse establishment it’s a functional, practical, clean, comfortable hotel. Enough English to easily get by but still predominantly and thankfully Japanese. During my 12 day visit we had 4 meters of fresh snow and as I left anther 4 days of 60+cm fresh powder started. Tree runs are absolute world class attracting many away from European/Canadian/USA resorts. Unfortunately this hidden gem won’t remain hidden for much longer!! Move fast!!! See you next year, I’m doing 3 weeks.

Stayed here for 6 nights for a ski holiday and we had to change room half way through as I booked late and they were fully booked. Lovely staff they moved our stuff to the new room which meant we could go out for the day to enjoy skiing. Location isn't in the centre of town which wasn't a problem. There is a shuttle bus to the ski resorts, if you don't have a car. We did have a car which made it really easy. Onsen was lovely after a full day's of skiing. There was a ski rental shop opposite the hotel which was convent. We had breakfast and dinner included one of the waitresses called June was super friendly and very welcoming. Was a joy to see her everyday.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, the rooms spotless and comfortable, and the location unbeatable for a ski trip to Hakuba! A bus stop right outside the hotel provided free shuttle service to most of Hakuba’s ski resorts, making transportation incredibly convenient. Echoland, with its vibrant array of restaurants and bars, was just a 10-minute walk in one direction, while Hakuba town center was a short 10-minute stroll in the other—an ideal central base for exploring the area. The hotel also offered excellent ski gear storage and a relaxing onsen, perfect for unwinding after a day on the slopes. Highly recommended for a memorable stay!

Was worried at first about booking a chalet in Hakuba as we were coming by public transportation, but the hotel group's shuttle service and concierge were so helpful and we never felt like we needed our own car. Free pick up and drop off at the bus/train station, to the lifts and ski rental shops, restaurants etc. The location was also close enough to town that we could walk to restaurants at night. The private in-chalet onsen bath was a huge plus.

The first mention of all the things we loved about Anise Garden has to be Nanjo, the host. He's such a lovely guy, and helped us out a lot during our stay. The room was so warm and cosy, we had a great night's sleep, the bed was the comfiest we slept in during our 3 week trip in Japan. The onsen is of course the icing on the cake, especially in a mountain town like Hakuba.

Staff in the reception is very helpful and willing to provide you all useful information about the status of all outdoor activities and scenic spots. And you can book subtle bus to reach all these places. Don't miss the coffee in the coffee bar as it reaches Barista-making level. The hot spring public bath on top floor has a genius source of it. Must try! There is a Lawson just located in the other side of the main road. You can buy some stuff with a very short walking distance. There are not so many restaurants operating during weekdays. I would prefer to walking to snow peak LAND STATION to have my meal. It takes 20 minutes to go there. The bus terminal is just next to the hotel. I found it very easy to leave for Nagano train station after checked out. Overall I will stay again next time when I'm back.

Well, this Japanese resort had the edge on the European Alps...

Well, this Japanese resort had the edge on the European Alps for snow this Christmas (despite early snow in the Alps). The resort runs were bare when we got there but conditions at altitude were very good, and enhanced by a massive dump of snow mid-week. There are plenty of Onsen bathing options - perfect for relaxing Apres ski and whether public or private they cost very little - I wish I could have visited more of them! Snow monkeys climbing the pylons in Happo-One a definite highlight!

Great location directly opposite chair lifts and Gondola. Easy to ski in/out. Hotel was great. Recently refurbished and well managed . Staff were excellent and friendly and offered great service.Good bar and cafe as part of hotel made the stay more pleasant. Rooms are roomy by Japanese hotel standards but are a little functional as opposed to comfortable. Beds are very hard and not very comfortable.

It is like Europe in the midst of Asia.

It is like Europe in the midst of Asia. Mountains, snow, quiet solitude, mixed with quaint Japanese houses - magical. There were convenience stores quite aplenty and easy to drive around, though the roads were a little narrow and unkempt. Be sure to have a 4WD.

We stayed near Tsugaike Kogen. It's a nice small town.

We stayed near Tsugaike Kogen. It's a nice small town. The main drawback is that there is very limited affordable (i.e 1000 to 2000 yen per person) dining options and no supermarket. We had to drive down to echoland for dinner.

I love this location. you can get everywhere without a car...

I love this location. you can get everywhere without a car because there are many shuttles, taxis, and buses. the hotel staff will drive you for free at this place. also you can walk to some nearby places if it is not too cold for you. make sure you bring waterproof shoes and cold weather socks and clothes. renting snowboard gear can be cheaper than bringing your own.

Our peak experience was a trip up to Happo-ike (Happo Pond)...

Our peak experience was a trip up to Happo-ike (Happo Pond) on a glorious day after fresh snow the night before (late October). We decided to stay 4 nights in the area because we wanted to optimise our chances of having a fabulous day up on the mountain. It worked! On each day of our stay, we walked sections of the Shionomichi (Salt trail), visited nearby lakes, wandered along forest paths through giant stands of cypress & generally had a wonderful time. We appreciated the microwave in the corridor and LOVED the onsen - very atmospheric with a covered outdoor section. Our host was wonderfully helpful.

Great slopes lots of beginners and intermediate runs.

Great slopes lots of beginners and intermediate runs. Lots of eateries but limited apre ski activities This resort is only accessible via bus and there are queues The restaurants are small and fill up so not a lot of choice
