We recommend staying at Canmore over Banff.

We recommend staying at Canmore over Banff. While preparing for our trip to Banff National Park, we had read that the accommodations at Banff were older and less well-maintained. Upon visiting the two towns, we found this general vibe to be true. Both are quaint and charming, but Canmore is far less crowded, has newer and more modern accommodations and more eating places, and doesn't have the nightmare parking problems of Banff town. We enjoyed popping into the town of Banff for daytrips and returning to Canmore for the evening. The town center of Canmore has lovely shops and eating establishments, many within walking distance. We recommend Rocky Mountain Bagel Company not only for breakfast (go before 9 am for shorter lines) but for take-out bagels to pack on hikes. Tavern 1883 has wonderful, wonderful haddock fish and chips. Stonewaters is one of the best gift stores I've been to in a long time, and Big Bear Trading Company has the absolute best souvenir apparel (Tshirts and hoodies and crewnecks). We had good burgers and sandwiches at the Grizzly Paw Taproom (first floor) as well as pizza and wings at Tank 310 (second floor). We stayed at the Spring Creek resort community, which was just 5 minutes' drive from the town center, but from which we could also walk via a gorgeous walking path to the town center in 15 minutes.

    Canmore is wonderful.

Canmore is wonderful. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance. Views of mountains virtually 360 degrees, and beautiful streams and Bow river running right through town. Best of all, not nearly as crowded as Banff Town. Highly recommend staying here if visiting Banff National Park.

Our time in Canmore was absolutely fantastic.

Our time in Canmore was absolutely fantastic. The town has everything you need for daily life, but it also offers a great variety of tourist attractions and activities. The surrounding hiking trails are exceptionally well-marked, with plenty of information along the way, and the scenery is simply breathtaking. If you haven’t seen the Bow River in person, you’re really missing out—it’s a must-see highlight of the area. We took a day trip to Jasper, including the Columbia Icefield—highly recommended! In hindsight, however, the drive back from Jasper felt very long and tiring, so next time I would definitely plan to stay overnight instead of returning the same day. Our itinerary also included excursions to Banff, which is conveniently close to Canmore. Exploring Banff’s attractions and hiking trails was easily manageable. We especially recommend the Johnston Canyon hike to the waterfalls. It’s an incredibly beautiful trail, not too strenuous, and definitely worth your time. On a rainy day, we tried an audio-guided driving tour and were genuinely impressed by how much we learned—it was both engaging and informative. A boat trip on Lake Minnewanka turned out to be well worth the cost as well. All in all, Canmore is an ideal base to explore the Canadian Rockies, offering plenty for both adventure seekers and those just looking to relax and enjoy the nature.

2nd stop of our road trip from Calgary to Vancouver, we spent 1 night at The Georgetown Inn. What we liked: + Great base for exploring Canmore and its surroundings (Bow River Loop, Grassi Lakes, Policeman's Creek Boardwalk, and many more) + Very comfortable bedding + Superb room, extremely spacious and well-organized + Helpful receptionist who advised us on local trails and kindly provided a bear spray + Pleasant pub within the hotel with decent food + Excellent value for money

Good location especially if taking the bus and not driving. About 15 minute walk to downtown Canmore. Had a small kitchenette to fill up water and a fridge in the room. Good hotel if you’re just using the place as a base to sleep and not looking for many amenities/ luxury.
