It is a nice place just to do nothing but it is not that beautiful. The resort we stayed at had absolutely nothing near or around it and the shuttle bus service was not consistent or frequent. To go to the gorge took 4 hours by bus, train and bus and walking. I would probably choose another beautiful place or island as a preference now I know this.Guest review byFionaAustralia - 10.0
We arrived in Takachiho after a morning at Mt Aso.
We arrived in Takachiho after a morning at Mt Aso. When we arrived, we visited the gorge and did the walk from the free car park. Our boat ride was first thing the following morning but as we’d been the day before, we’d taken lots of photos and got the lay of the land. It made our morning very efficient as we were able to get on the road straight after our boat ride!Guest review byZoeAustralia - 10.0

Beautiful city with friendly people, the food is amazing (Miyazaki beef, chicken nanban, local fish and local fruits). Traveling around is best done with a bicycle or car. Best activities are hiking, surfing and eating.Guest review byMartinSlovenia - 10.0

One of the slightly less developed parts of Kyushu - a little touristy without being too busy. The locals are very friendly and the beach is perfect for surfing and chilling out. In Aoshima try Upper Yard burgers, Sanbarco fusion food and Aoshima Coffee. Also, don't miss Obi Castle town. Obi is a very well preserved Edo era samurai town built by the former elites who ruled Miyazaki.Guest review byLukeUnited Kingdom - 10.0
I loved Takachiho!
I loved Takachiho! It was such a quaint and local Japanese town. The surrounding mountains were beautiful and even accentuated by the downpour of rain I had on the first day. Visiting the gorge was a bucket list item and I was pleasantly surprised when I found the Amanoiwato Shrine to visit the following day.Guest review bysellars - 10.0

This is a very quiet traditional town that had everything we needed. The beach nearby was lovely (black sand) and the people very friendly. Good for access to surf beached but probably need a rental car if surfing. Very little choice in food but what there was, was delicious. very relaxing few days.Guest review byCaroleAustralia - 6.0
We were there in June which is rainy / off season.
We were there in June which is rainy / off season. We came to surf but the swell was low and it rained two of three days. The town has potential but is overall run down. It’s like it is stuck in the 1980s and no one has been maintain g or keeping it updated .Guest review byCatherineUnited States - 10.0

We first visited Takachiho 14 years ago during March and decided to go back during a different season in October .The town has grown in size with a plush hotel and a local supermarket and getting around ismuch more easier . The only thing we would change would probably be the fun we had with the language barrier on our first visit . The Gorge is the main stay to the trip and we had the same reaction as last time that it blew us away againGuest review byWayneUnited Kingdom - 10.0
I loved my long-weekend trip to Hyuga.
I loved my long-weekend trip to Hyuga. It's a fantastic place just to surf and it's less crowded. The other surfers were friendly, just a smile is all it takes. It had tons of great food just a drive away. The seafood was something to salivate over. The scenery was serene. It's definitely worth a visit especially if you're into surfing.Guest review byseoyousoonJapan
