We stayed in Montevideo proper at Cala di Volpe.
We stayed in Montevideo proper at Cala di Volpe. It was exactly the right hotel to stay at. Close to the city center, across the street from the ocean, on the rambla (sea walk and we walked for hours). Two blocks from a shopping center with restaurants and high end stores. I lived in Montevideo as a child for three years as a foreign aid brat back in the 60's and it hasn't changed. It is safe and has a very European feel. I described it to my wife as Italy without Roman ruins or any tourists and she confirmed it was exactly that. It's relaxed and congenial. It's not festive like Rio nor in your face arrogant like Buenos Aires. It's a place to stroll and enjoy the cleanliness of the city.Guest review byForster - 10.0

The tourist office provided information, but only about the old town, and not about Palermo and Pocitos, which are equally fascinating, with lovely buildings. Great place to combine beach with city holiday. Something for everyone. Safe and beautiful kind considerate Uruguayans. Huge and smart shopping mall less than 10 mins walk. Beautiful, impressive architecture and historic buildings, but mostly deteriorating with trash and litter and homelessness. Outside of the old city there are more modern places but they all suffer from the same general lack of care.
