Roman Roots in Germany's Oldest City

Germany’s oldest city and a provincial capital of the Western Roman Empire until the 3rd century, Trier is overflowing with exquisite architecture and Roman ruins such as the Amphitheater and Porta Nigra gate. The colossal Cathedral Trier is also the oldest of its kind in Germany.

The historic landmarks continue with the 2nd-century Roman bridge that crosses over the Moselle River, which also passes through nearby Luxembourg and France. Cruises along the Moselle start in Koblenz and end in Trier.

Trier was the home of Karl Marx and the 15th-century University of Trier is home to a large student population that often refers to the university as Karl-Marx-University of Trier. His birthplace is now a museum, Karl Marx House.

A wonderful example of the Christmas markets in Germany can be found each year in Trier, at Hauptmarkt Square in front of the cathedral. Make sure you check Booking.com for special deals on hotels during this period.

Hotels that guests love in Trier

    • Good breakfast, friendly staff . Some people have commented about the area, please don't let this stop your visit, there are a lot worse places in London. Trier is worth a visit if only for a couple of days, locals were friendly and the hotel is good value.

    • Really enjoyed our stay. Charming and helpful staff. Hotel Bistro has excellent local cuisine and wines. Location perfect for exploring Trier, across the street from the Porta Nigra, easy walk to/from train station and also to Arena Trier.

    • Comfortable, clean and excellent value. Lovely, helpful staff. Very popular German brauhaus restaurant. Easy, free parking. Free WiFi. Nice swimming pool. Easy, regular bus into Trier right outside hotel.

    • Tomtom finds hotel easily. Room was very pleasant Free parking, lift. Desk staff very helpful Easy bus access to Trier, but return journey may be to different place. Breakfasts good. Two restaurants a. In the brewery is simple German food but well cooked. b. International cooking and surprisingly good.

    • The Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigre was a very pleasant surprise -- the accommodations far exceeded my expectations, based upon the photos and descriptions available when I booked our room. The view of Porta Nigra from our room was incredible! Parking was very convenient, the breakfast was a good value, and the staff was very pleasant.
