Sweeping along the coast against a mountain backdrop, San Diego has easy living down to a fine art. Its wonderful beaches and mild climate make it a favourite spring break destination, and with over 40 city breweries, there are plenty of ice cold beers to set the mood.
The city’s most recognisable landmark is the Hotel del Coronado, a wooden Victorian beach resort, now a National Historic Landmark. The original Spanish mission, the first in California, has been relocated to the Mission Valley area, and Old Town San Diego still has many Colonial buildings and quirky shops. Also great for shopping are Horton Plaza and the boutiques in the beachfront neighbourhoods.
The city’s most famous attraction is its zoo in Balboa Park, a few blocks from San Diego International Airport. One of the world’s largest zoos, it is well worth a visit, as is the fantastic SeaWorld, home to several killer whales. To see wildlife in its natural habitat head to La Jolla beach where harbour seals rest, or watch whales in season from Point Loma Lighthouse.
Just over the border from Mexico’s Tijuana, San Diego has a distinctly Latin American vibe and a variety of accommodation encompassing apartments, motels, B&Bs and hotels. See Booking.com for the best deals.
“The price was an awesome value for the stay! Close to everything in San Diego, Airport, Gaslamp District, Sea World, Convention Center. The staff was friendly and responded quickly to requests. Rooms were clean and tidy.”
“Location is convenient for beach & restaurants and staff were very nice - rooms are spacious”
“Room was clean, comfortable. Wash the glasses before you drink - Maids were pleasant, but the restaurant was incredible. Bunz, I believe was the name and if you like a great Ceasar Salad and a Gourmet Burger, this is your place. Pleasant and intimate pool area in the back of the property which removed the sounds of the freeway pretty effectively.”
“Super view, super waves, super girls on the beach”
“- position - structure - pools - equipped patio garden and pond just out of the room -atmosphere”
“Kid friendly, nice water temperature in the pool ocean right infront. K reug coffe maker in the room. Very spacious room. Super clean and confi. Thanks!”
“A downtown location by the sea. High Stanard, Good location and value for money. Nice pool area for late afternoon swim. Our best stop on the westcost trip.”
“amazing place and relax I relly like it”
“Just great facilities and location for a business travler.”
“This is an excellent hotel. Very friendly personnel. Nice, clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel is close to the airport and in spite of this pretty quiet. Free Wifi, free parking and pretty good breakfast for USA standards.”
“We got a upgrade to a suite with balcony og sea view. Very nice staff, clean and nice pool, great location close to restaurants and stores. Nice breakfast at the rooftop with nice sea view. We will come back.”
“You get what you pay for, friendly staff, close to many attractions.”
“Amazing...next to the beach, rooms are comfortable and clean and the staff couldn't be nicer. Will be coming back here a lot!”
“Not often that you cannot find a single fault with an hotel. This one had none. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything about our stay was perfect. On arrival at the airport you are met by the hotel’s free airport shuttle, and same method on departure. A nice touch! Our room (12th floor) overlooked the entire bay and we woke up every morning to superb panoramic views across the harbour. Would recommend asking for a room as high up as is available, in either Tower II or Tower III– you will not be disappointed. There is some aircraft noise but it did not bother us. Room we had was a family one that suited our requirements exactly. Two large double beds, a walk-in massive shower area, all the usual room amenities refreshed daily and to top it all, a sit-out balcony with stunning views. No fridge in room, but ice machine on each floor, so no issue here. The hotel has a nice secluded pool with plenty of surrounding loungers. Service throughout the hotel was first class, in particular reception and maid service. The hotel offers free security boxes at reception – well worthwhile. The little shop at the hotel entrance stocks the usual necessities and some reasonable souvenir things…and bottles of very reasonably priced chilled wine – ideal for winding down on the balcony taking in the vista. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough”
“Very well placed, close to harbour and the Gaslamp Quarter. Tramlines nearby for access to greater San Diego. All the amenities you would expect from a hotel of this standard and at this price. Staff was very courteous and friendly. Good sized rooms and a fantastic view from almost all rooms.”
“You con walk in downtown san Diego quite well from the hotel. The gaslamp quarter is really close and worth seeing. It's very close to highway 5 so it's a good starting point to visit places outside downtown”
“Hotel situation even it's not close to the downtown is well communicated so in just 10 minutes you can reach Gaslamp street.”
“Friendly personel, large room, clean, efficient airco, quiet even while in the vicinity of I-8. Mind you, every hotel on Hotel Circle South or North is lining the I-8. Restaurants on site: one is Mexican which gives you a 15% discount if you stay at the King's Inn; the other The Waffle Spot which gives you 10%. ”
