There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist...

There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others...

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm! There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer. Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!! Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Perfectly located, between the main Plaza 9 de Julio and the Balcarce peñas for going out at night. This hotel is gorgeous. It’s located in town, but the rooms are completely silent at night. The staff were very helpful, and we loved the egg and avocado toast breakfast. The medialunas were also memorable. My partner loved the music selection in the lobby: jazz, which is enough for him to love the entire experience of staying here.

Hotel have nice page at booking.com and ok prices, but as soon I reserved place they informed me that price is 21% higher. In whole Argentina when you book hotel and pay with credit card you are not paying tax, but here they are telling customers that they gave some discount and because of that they have to charge VAT. In the end they dont charge VAT but simply charge you rate which is 21% higher. Avoid if you can!!!

Best place we stayed in salta (and we had to hop around a bit since it was a holiday week). Great location for food and checking out local peña or even for a walk downtown. Apartment was so comfortable with everything you would need for even a stay of a few weeks. Host was very kind and tried his best to assist in whatever we needed. Loved the keypad entry so we didn't need to worry about losing keys.

Excellent location. 10-15 minus to Salta Omni but terminal by foot. Bus terminal close around midnight. Big room, strong WIFI. Two bathrooms just outside the room. Kitchen has kettle , fridge, microwave and chinaware. Small Supermarket is just next door. No Uber service in Salta Airport area. We have to take a cab from there to the hostel. Selina is in the perfect location. It’s close to the main square and on the same street as all of the penas. The hostel was clean, nicely decorated and the bed was the comfiest I’ve ever stayed in in a hostel. The restaurant was also very good and the meals were great value for money (especially the menu ejecutivo). Also the best coffee I’ve had since being in Argentina!

Everything was absolutely wonderful! This was a great apartment for our two night stay in Salta. The kitchen is well-stocked, the apartment is spacious, and the bathroom is roomy and well-lit. The rooftop terrace is a pleasant place to spend an evening. The apartment is an easy 20-minute walk along Belgrano to the center. Or you can catch a taxi right at the corner.

A very cosy place in a nice quiet neighbourhood, very close to everything you need in Salta and not overcrowded at the same time. The staff was amazing, they let us stay downstairs in the hotel after checking out on a boiling hot Sunday day which literally saved our lives and let us continue our journey with some energy left.
