Salta is a beautiful town. We spent only two days within the city, but what makes the trip richer is the cities we spent the other days. You may take tours that visit those other places (like Cachi, Purmamarca, Salinas Grandes etc). We took one tour (Cachi) and then we rent a car and spent the other days in Tilcara, visiting Purmamarca, Humahuaca, Tilcara itself and Salinas Grandes. In our way back to Salta we passed through San Antônio de los Cobres. After that, we also went to Cafayate. In the region of Salta and Jujuy each travel was an attraction itself because the view of the roads is really beautiful, so it was really enjoyable. In Salta we visited the cerro San Bernardo. You may get up/down on foot, by taking some stairs which took us about 30-40 min to go up and 15-20 min to go down, it depends on how is your physical condition, or by chair lift, which costs ARG$ 55 eahc way and takes about 5 min. Up in the cerro You can appreciate the view of the city. The chair lift starts in the city park (San Martin), so You can visit both places in one day. You can also walk in the central plaza, which is pleasant and has a lot of restaurants. There are a lot of museums, but we visited only one (MAAM, which is at central plaza, well structured, does not take too long and is famous for preserving 500 year-old mummified children and it introduces you to the rich Inca cultura.
In terms of tours agency, we had a great experience with "Salta Rafting". They are very competent, totally recommend it. They have all the adrenaline tours we were looking for: rafting (obviously heheh), mountain biking, quads, zip lining, and also include the common tours to Humauhuaca, Cafayete and El Chaqui. Great agency. Food wise we had a couple of bad experiences, the restaurants can be quite expensive for such a dirty place and mediocre food... The attention is generally good. We try as much as possible to go to the local places and have the local food... but it didn`t turn out much satisfactory this time, anyways, the best meal we had was in a "Bixi Coffee House", clean, newly refurbished and the food was very tasty, although it isn`t much different from any other coffee place we can find in any other place, but it was safe choice and delicious. It worth the visit :) Salta is very easy to get around, a pair of flip flops and you are ready to go.
Lots of places to see around, but mainly it is 3-4 hours of driving one way. If you'd like to see all of them, we'd recommend to move from one place to another, not staying in Salta all the time.
It offers a great and quick view of the regional culture. The Museums around the plaza are very good! We did not have time to go to Cafayate (8 hours transport back and forth) but we bought wines and would prioritize it next time, the same with the Tren de las nubes. Empanadas and bife de chorizo were our favorites dishes. We ate around the plaza and went very well, don't remember the names of the restaurants, but one is located in front of the Uruburo museum on the Caseros street.
Busy and active old town. Some quaint interesting areas around the Pl;aza 9 de Julio. The MAAM museum is a must see for the three Inca children mummies that were found unearthed in 1999 in the western part of the province.
Beautiful old colonial architecture, courteous people, wonderful museums, lots of music, good food, interesting handicraft shopping. I was not quite prepared for the stifling, humid heat, but it was worth it.
This boutique hotel was exactly what we were looking for in Salta - off on a quiet street but still within walking distance of busier areas. The view from breakfast/the pool deck was amazing! The decor and staff truly made it feel like we were at home, especially with little touches throughout our stay. Very comfortable room and bed with a great minibar!
