There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...
Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
My partner and I greatly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The room was beautiful and we had a lovely balcony overlooking the courtyard. The staff was exceptionally kind and breakfast was served early enough to accomodate for day tours that started before 7 AM. Additionally, when our flight was cancelled due to an airline strike, the hotel quickly changed our reservation from 3 nights to 2 nights. The location was perfect and a less than 10 minute walk to the main square. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Salta.
Price/quality wise = 10! Good place to stay in Salta approx. 10 minutes walk from the Plaza and 20 minutes from the bus terminal. Spacious dorm downstairs with comfortable beds. The dorm upstairs was less spacious and felt quite packed, but had an ensuite bathroom as bonus. There were also separate toilets and showers (the ones I had were good). Lockers for smaller bags outside the rooms. WiFi worked well and it’s a good place to meet other people. And not to forget the very friendly and helpful staff😃
Bang smack in the middle of Salta, two blocks from the main plaza 9th July this hotel has huge rooms on the ground floor, facing away from the street so nice and quiet and dark rooms. Large bathroom and good air conditioning. Breakfast was delicious with eggs cooked to liking and tons of drinks and sweet bakery items. The free drinking water fountain was a bonus. Plenary of asado restaurants nearby so you don’t have to venture far. Would recommend staying here.
Absolutely everything! This B&B is fantastic. My hosts Lalo and Oscar were so hospitable. The accommodation is very clean, smells great, lovely fluffy towels, a very clean and completely functional bathroom and the shower was great. Comfy beds and the breakfast that is included in the rate is so delicious with plenty to choose from and fill up on. I am so glad I found this place! It absolutely made my stay in Salta.
I had a great stay in Salta that was made particularly pleasant staying at Accueillant. Eduardo and his family are all fantastic hosts and very accommodating for whatever requests I had. They also arranged for tours around the Salta area. The place is a bit off center, but a nice walk to the city and all the amenities are found around the hostel. It made for a quiet stay, which was perfect for me.
The hotel is clean, and quiet with the room on the back with free parking. The location is super and right in the city centre. Staffs are excellent and accommodating, special thanks for Noelia for her help. In addition, they can change dollars to pesos with close to blue rate . We stayed the hotel twice and both times are excellent. Highly recommended.
It is a new apartment, all clean and tidy! Comfortable and with hot shower. It has hair dryer which was very hard to find in other places in Argentina.
Alejandra (host) is very nice, flexible with check-in and payment. Also, sent us details about the check in and how to access the apartment in advance.
By far the best place we stayed in Argentina, the hosts are an amazing couple that cares about the every small detail and makes sure you are 100% comfortable, the breakfast was the best we had in the country. If we will be back in Salta again this is the only place we aee going to stay in for sure!
That's an amazing apartement. It looks just like on the pictures. It's big with a lot of space and everything was really nice and clean. Location is amazing and the hosts nice. So definitely would recommend staying here. Tats probably one of the nicest apartments in Salta!
The rooms are spacious. staff ars super friendly and they offered a welcome Salta wine. Breakfast was nice and they take individual orders for eggs. It's close enough to walk around the center. I highly recommend staying at Legado.
A really wonderful stay here. Beautiful gardens, spacious and comfortable rooms and kind, helpful hosts at an affordable price. We tried to return here when we stopped back through Salta but it was fully booked. Highly recommend
Nice, colonial style accommodation close to Salta’s main square. The staff was absolutely amazing, very helpful and attentive.
I think the price is a bit too high for what they offer, but overall it was a nice stay.
Great room with a lovely view over the square. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was superb and the hotel even organised an airport pickup on arrival. We’d highly recommend the hotel and staying here.
Nice Hotel, pleasant staff, excellent location and free parking. Room was comfortable. Towels were large and fluffy. Breakfast was good and the staff ensured the buffet was always replenished in time.
Easy walk to the town centre, clean apartment and nice area to eat breakfast. A really great location for a base in Salta to explore. Staff were very helpful and there was a place to store luggage.
The hotel is absolutely charming and beautiful. The attention to detail is magnificent and the staff is top notch. The staff made sure to be ready and stay late for our delayed arrival.
Stayed here for a week while visiting Salta and would 100% recommend. The rooms are very clean, a/c and wifi work great. Close to the city center and restaurants.
