There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others...
We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...
Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
This is a great, clean hotel centrally located in Salta. Plenty of nearby restaurants in easy walking distance. Also near transit stops for travel around the city. The hotel is beautifully maintained, with a nice lobby and eating area as well as a grassy patio for spending a quiet afternoon reading in the sun. The staff are very friendly and helpful, answering questions about the city and arranging tours. Our room was clean with plenty of hanging closet space. Breakfast incuded fresh pastries, yogurt, ham and cheese, fruit.
This is a newer apartment, in a safe location just outside the central part of Salta, about 15-20 min walk from Salta Shopping Alto Moa, or 40 min walk from the central plaza 9.Julio. The apart is clean, quiet, safe and has what you need for an extended stay. The bed is firm, the a/c works well, the jungle shower is hot, tv has Netflix, internet works well. There are supermarket and restaurants in the area, all in all 100% recommended.
Hotel have nice page at booking.com and ok prices, but as soon I reserved place they informed me that price is 21% higher.
In whole Argentina when you book hotel and pay with credit card you are not paying tax, but here they are telling customers that they gave some discount and because of that they have to charge VAT. In the end they dont charge VAT but simply charge you rate which is 21% higher.
Avoid if you can!!!
The location is perfect. The street is nice, and typical Salta. The hotel is very nice. Everything was great. The room; wow! We liked it a lot! And the small garden is good to relax. The reception lady was very kind. She helps you and give you the possibility to store your bags and to use the garden earlier (if you arrive too early). You can also stay in the garden when you check out.
Very nice and charming hotel just in front of the central square in Salta. Nice and helpful staff. Breakfast is okay too. You are right in the spot of Salta, but still very little noise from the streets.
Here you really get the atmosphere of “colonial ambience”. Everything works fine, we stayed here twice, and would definitely go the again. You really get value for the money.
Well-located hotel a block from Salta's main square. A comfortable but soulless largish hotel. Bonus is the rooftop pool, but, again, could have been made a lot more charming with better seating, more tables, umbrellas and a bar that was actually open and staffed! Breakfast adequate. No comparison to Vicuna Hotel, where we also stayed. See my review. And more expensive!
Very friendly staff. The girls took care over my luggage while I was heading towards Jujuy. Later I stayed one more night in the hotel before heading to the airport. It’s good value for money! Private bathroom and nice, big rooms. Besides that, the hotel is very well located. Right in the middle of the city centre. Highly recommend!
Everything! One of our favorite boutique hotel stays anywhere in the world. The staff are incredibly kind, helpful, and speak perfect English. The hotel is modern, impeccably designed, and spotlessly clean. The rooms are quiet. The beds are comfortable. The shower pressure is strong. The location is central.
By far the best place we stayed in Argentina, the hosts are an amazing couple that cares about the every small detail and makes sure you are 100% comfortable, the breakfast was the best we had in the country. If we will be back in Salta again this is the only place we aee going to stay in for sure!
Such a lovely hostel! Dorm beds were big with a curtain around the bed, big lockers and aircon in the rooms. Free breakfast at the hotel next door was very nice. Would definitely recommend staying here, one of the nicer hostels I’ve been in Argentina so far
The hotel is located on the outskirts of town and about a 15 minute walk to the main plaza. It faces a small square and there is very little passing traffic so it's pleasant to sit outside. The staff go out of their way to be pleasant and helpful
Comfortable and clean rooms and facilities. Great location next to restaurants and peñas on calle Balcarce, a few blocks from Salta main square and train station. Very friendly staff, particularly Diego, Vicentin, Javier, and Ruben.
This is a lovely little hotel in the center of town with very comfortable beds and white clean sheets and towels. Nice helpful staff. We were happy to discover they had an elevator! We would definitely stay here again!
Property was perfect for a stay in Salta. Close to the main square where everything happens.
The staff were very helpful, arrived very late at night and they made sure we checked in fine and easy. Highly recommended.
It was my third and fourth stay at this hotel and in my opinion it gives the best value for money for a central Salta.
It is one block from Plaze 9 de Julio and even has an onsite parking (limited capacity).
Absolutely beautiful hotel right in the heart of Salta. Comfy beds, spotless, all the details thought of. Breakfast was tasty. The staff were so helpful and friendly.
everything about this hotel was lovely: the room, the property, the breakfast, and the staff. would absolutely stay here again! thank you for the lovely vacation
