There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...
Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
Wonderful place to stay in Salta. Moments away from restaurants, bars, city centre and touristic attractions. Location is great as is the price. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Literally anything can be arranged by Adriana and Deborah. What a lovely ladies. There is enough space for you to chill and relax. Very clean bathroom and toilets. The whole hostel is thoroughly cleaned everyday. Good Internet connection. If you planning to come to Salta, book your stay here.
This is a family-run establishment. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. The facilities were good. The common areas were spacious and clean. The breakfast was delicious. They had a space heater available upon request for the room, though ultimately I didn't need it (June 2022). The neighborhood felt safe. I would definitely recommend Accueillant and and would stay there again if I returned to Salta.
This small, cozy hotel had very nice, comfortable rooms, spacious bathrooms, and a beautiful outdoor garden with a small pool. Situated in walking distance to the main plaza and many restaurants. Staff were wonderful (thank you again for all your help and for making us feel so welcome). Best of all was the cat that hangs around the hotel, which made himself at home in our room one evening!
What are great and comfortable stay in Salta! They room is huge, spotless clean and in a very old and big house only a 10 min.walk to they center of Salta. A quick and cheap laundry is also in walking distance.
Emilia is such a nice hosts who prepares every morning a nice breakfast at what ever time you need it.
I definetly come back to Emilias place whenever i will be back to Salta!
The location is excellent for exploring Salta. Walking distance to everything. The hotel
itself is clean and comfortable, if a bit gloomy. As it is an old colonial building, there are no windows to the outside - only to the interior courtyard. But the air conditioning worked so we were comfortable enough. Staff is helpful and friendly. Breakfast is excellent and generous.
Selina is in the perfect location. It’s close to the main square and on the same street as all of the penas. The hostel was clean, nicely decorated and the bed was the comfiest I’ve ever stayed in in a hostel. The restaurant was also very good and the meals were great value for money (especially the menu ejecutivo). Also the best coffee I’ve had since being in Argentina!
This was one of my favourite places in five weeks of travelling round Argentina. I loved the little courtyards downstairs and the staff were kind, helpful and friendly and the location by the park was great and handy for the bus station . My room wasn’t modern or sleek but had all I needed.
A beautifully renovated colonial building with polite and professional staff, decent breakfast (by Argentina standards, don't except a full English or German cold cut buffet) and very quiet for a great night's sleep. Good location about halfway between the central square and the bus station.
A wonderful hotel in Salta. I loved staying here. The room was very comfortable and spacious. The jacuzzi bath was amazing after a long day trip! The communal areas are relaxing and the staff are all excellent and incredibly helpful! I would highly recommend staying here.
This hotel is for those willing to forgo some luxuries we usually expect in a hotel in order to have a decent price. That being said, I would stay here again. It's a relatively cheap price, with a pool, some breakfast, and not to far from the center of town.
Check-in was easy and although the staff was remote, they were helpfull.
Rooms/appartments were clean and well stocked.
Downtown Salta was only a 20 minute walk away, the immidiate area around the building felt safe.
Would stay here again.
Very comfortable place, quiet atmosphere. Easy to walk from the hotel to all the main sights. The hosts did everything to make you feel at home, very friendly people! The breakfast was the best I've had throughout my stay in Argentina :)
A really wonderful stay here. Beautiful gardens, spacious and comfortable rooms and kind, helpful hosts at an affordable price. We tried to return here when we stopped back through Salta but it was fully booked. Highly recommend
Property was perfect for a stay in Salta. Close to the main square where everything happens.
The staff were very helpful, arrived very late at night and they made sure we checked in fine and easy. Highly recommended.
It was my third and fourth stay at this hotel and in my opinion it gives the best value for money for a central Salta.
It is one block from Plaze 9 de Julio and even has an onsite parking (limited capacity).
The location could not be better. It is in front of Saltas main square. If you travel by car there is a parking lot half a block from the hotel (you must pay extra 800 Argentinian pesos, about 5 USD).
Great location and really good service from the front desk staff. I have stayed at major hotel chains in the past and did not receive the attention to detail. Great staff!
