There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
I was in Argentina for 3 1/2 weeks and stayed in many B&Bs and Airbnbs. This was by far the best place I stayed - and the least expensive ! It was truly a wonderful hotel (I stayed 2 non consecutive nights). The rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The breakfast was outstanding. The location is excellent - short walk to the historic center. Very quiet area. Short walk to the bus station. I would definitely stay here again.
This is a newer apartment, in a safe location just outside the central part of Salta, about 15-20 min walk from Salta Shopping Alto Moa, or 40 min walk from the central plaza 9.Julio. The apart is clean, quiet, safe and has what you need for an extended stay. The bed is firm, the a/c works well, the jungle shower is hot, tv has Netflix, internet works well. There are supermarket and restaurants in the area, all in all 100% recommended.
Hotel have nice page at booking.com and ok prices, but as soon I reserved place they informed me that price is 21% higher.
In whole Argentina when you book hotel and pay with credit card you are not paying tax, but here they are telling customers that they gave some discount and because of that they have to charge VAT. In the end they dont charge VAT but simply charge you rate which is 21% higher.
Avoid if you can!!!
Best place we stayed in salta (and we had to hop around a bit since it was a holiday week). Great location for food and checking out local peña or even for a walk downtown.
Apartment was so comfortable with everything you would need for even a stay of a few weeks. Host was very kind and tried his best to assist in whatever we needed.
Loved the keypad entry so we didn't need to worry about losing keys.
The location is perfect. The street is nice, and typical Salta. The hotel is very nice. Everything was great. The room; wow! We liked it a lot! And the small garden is good to relax. The reception lady was very kind. She helps you and give you the possibility to store your bags and to use the garden earlier (if you arrive too early). You can also stay in the garden when you check out.
Very nice and charming hotel just in front of the central square in Salta. Nice and helpful staff. Breakfast is okay too. You are right in the spot of Salta, but still very little noise from the streets.
Here you really get the atmosphere of “colonial ambience”. Everything works fine, we stayed here twice, and would definitely go the again. You really get value for the money.
Fantastic location very close to the main square. Very quiet and safe , lovely boutique hotel vibe . We used the hotel as a base for trips around the region, staying on three separate occasions, and each time we returned the staff made us so welcome. There was a convenient car park immediately next door. Nice pasties and fruit salad at breakfast.
Charming and beautiful hotel. Outstanding facilities and very quiet. Our room was extremely comfortable and we loved our private walled off courtyard. Breakfast was ample. Front desk staff was extremely friendly and were happy to make recommedations and went out of their way to be helpful.
A beautifully renovated colonial building with polite and professional staff, decent breakfast (by Argentina standards, don't except a full English or German cold cut buffet) and very quiet for a great night's sleep. Good location about halfway between the central square and the bus station.
Absolutely wonderful hotel. The hotel itself is a piece of history. Perfect location, easy parking right in the centre of the city, amazing breakfast, lovely staff. We stayed in Argentina in many locations over 3 weeks and this was my favourite place of them all.
A really wonderful stay here. Beautiful gardens, spacious and comfortable rooms and kind, helpful hosts at an affordable price. We tried to return here when we stopped back through Salta but it was fully booked. Highly recommend
LOVED this hotel, would absolutely stay here again. Staff was incredible, gave great recommendations for dinner and genuinely friendly and helpful. Nice views from the room, pretty garden area and grand looking interiors.
I really enjoyed my stay at Selina in Salta. It was easy to meet people and the facilities were like a hotel. Wifi was a bit slow but there were lots of people (remote workers) trying to use it, so this might be why.
The location was very good, a walking distance from the Salta's atractions. The breakfast was excellent including the possibility of choose the options from the menu. The staff kindness and attention was remarkable
The location could not be better. It is in front of Saltas main square. If you travel by car there is a parking lot half a block from the hotel (you must pay extra 800 Argentinian pesos, about 5 USD).
The hotel is very clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and it's a very personalised experience. There is plenty of space to relax and easy walking distance to everything
I would really recommend this place. The staff has been extremely professional and helpful throughout our stay. The hotel is really well located, close to a cute little park.
This is an old but mighty, bright house adapted as a lovely family hotel. The location can't be beat. The staff are AMAZING. Sweet, and super helpful. :)
