Take a guided tour through the colonial attractions, you will enjoy the history of the place much more. The fortress did have a nice interactive tour, also the Museo de las Casas Reales had a lot of information posted.
The food and shops in the Zona Colonial were more expensive than we really expected. But the Tourism Police have a constant presence and the whole area felt very safe. The staff at the hotel warned us about straying from the area though, so it is important to know where you are and what you plan on doing.
The Duarte wax museum was a pleasant surprise, and you should get to know the history of the Dominican Republic as it is fascinating. Even though they received independence from Spain in 1821, it wasn't really until 1965 that a truly independent democracy was established.

walking through ciudad colonial is a must..choosing where to eat is really hard..food quality is very low..i have tried a lot of different restaurants but was never 100% happy with the food...i wish the Indian restaurant had been open as i am sure it would have been delicious..the weather is too hot and humid to walk very far so it is a matter of continuously taking uber taxis.even so, i can never do all the things i want and its the 4th time i go there

it isn't the first time I visit but it is the first time i have used uber and it is a game changer..i mean in a hot humid chaotic city, even a person who loves walking like myself has to give it up...the only places you can easily walk around in , are shopping malls (the best is Agora mall) and the ciudad colonial. i have been told it is not safe at night but tbh i havent had any problem but cant guarantee it could be safe for everyone..
everyone is at Malecon , sea promenade, after 6pm, jogging, relaxing and eating..mind you, the water is extremely contaminated and smelly..nevertheless this city has got something special which makes u like it...and most people are friendly.. i dined at Layali arabic restaurant it was amazing with beautiful decor..and tasty food..$$..also dined on the top floor of agora mall..plenty of food stalls..i had chicken teryaki with rice $..if you avoid all tourist traps and buy your presents in the not so known shops and eat in the not so touristy spots, you will save a lot..pls some street vendors are extremely poor and even if you dont wana buy anything, a small change will make them happy..i always keep 100 pesos notes in my purse..around a dollar. dont forget to visit boca chica, a natural swimming pool where the water is crystal clear..weekdays best..weekend too crowded..only approx 20 min by bus

Great place to visit if you want to dance salsa or bachata.
Great place to visit if you want to dance salsa or bachata. You can attend a good dance lessons there. The city center (Colonial Zone) is pretty small and mildly interesting, you can see the most interesting places in few hours. Use uber/bolt to travel through the city.

Best of Santo Domingo: The Gastronomy.
Best of Santo Domingo: The Gastronomy. So many amazing restaurants like Buche Perico, and Loretta Cafe Bistro.
Not great in Santo Domingo: All the Museums in Zona Colonial were closed due to renovations. ( At the same time!)
Great location at the center of Zona Colonial. The receptionists are always friendly and responsive (in English too), and they were able to store my luggage before check-in (I arrived early). The hotel is very clean.
The room is spacious and comfortable. The shower is great (hot water always available, water pressure is perfect), the bed is comfortable and the WiFi worked great and fast in my room.
No elevator so be prepared to carry your luggage upstairs.
The price is really affordable so overall it’s a great value for money.
So many positives! I can only describe this hotel as a beautiful, charming, boutique hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is right in the heart of Ciudad Colonial, and the open atrium of the hotel is beaming with plants and trees - giving a calming nature effect. I arrived during a storm and the owner was very accommodating, and even offered to cook whatever food they had in the fridge because everywhere else was closed. I will 100% stay in Luca Hotel again if I go back to Santo Domingo!
My last time staying here was 18 years ago, and then 38 years ago, we visited this hotel a lot because 40 years ago my dad stayed in this hotel for a long period of time (I forgot how many days exactly), so this is a very special place for our family. A lot of memories here. Still a beautiful hotel and nice staff. Although it's an old hotel, the renovated rooms are very comfortable and the lobby is welcoming. Love it!! I will stay here next time when I come to Santo Domingo again.
When I first saw the rating of the place I was curious as it's so high. Yet after staying I understand why. The staff is phenomenally kind and helpful. They are really great people. Furthermore, the breakfast they served was heavenly. The best hotel breakfast I've had ever!!
The location is excellent + fairly safe for Santo Domingo so you can easily roam the Colonial Zone. of the city with plenty of restaurants, things to see/visit and a grocery store nearby.
What a wonderful hotel! And staff! Gorgeous large room, perfect placement in Zona Colonial, all was close and safe. I was a solo traveller and hotel's staff was very helpful to give me tips about the city. I loved the fact that you didnt need a key or card to enter your room, just your code that you set up for yourself. Coffee and tea and breakfast was perfect.
I am definitely staying here again and see you very soon.
The staff treated me well and were talking to me almost all the time. The hotel is located, literally, in the heart of the colonial zone area, just a few steps away from the Colon Park. I can't tell you about the breakfast and stuff like that from the hotel, as I always ate outside, and the bathroom was a tiny bit too small, but other than that, everything was absolutely fine with the stay.
The staff, they were attentive to our needs. They made us feel as if we were VIPs. The staff was knowledgeable and provided great recommendations on restaurants and places to go. Breakfast was made to order every morning.
The location was in Zona Colonial and only a couple of minutes from Calle Conde and the main square.
The hotel itself has a rich and interesting history.
Catalonia hotel in Santo Domingo is an excellent hotel, clean room with an ocean view, their room service was exceptional, great breakfast with diverse choice.
Catalonia hotel in Santo Domingo is really a 5 star .
I will definitely stay Definitely stay at Catalonia hotel again.
I had to stay longer in Santo Domingo and the choice was of course to stay in Catalonia, best hotel in the zone, it has amazing food in the breakfast and at it’s restaurant, it is spacious and have great views on the sea from everywhere! Love this place
The property is in a great location in the Colonial Zone. It is very easy to walk around and explore, along with access to bars & restaurants. The staff was wonderful. It was also a very nicely designed hotel in the common areas.
What an amazing stay! the place is absolutely gorgeous and has all what you need for your visit of Santo Domingo. parking is nearby, and the hotel is located perfectly inside the Zona Colonial. Highly recommended!
Such a cute Hotel located in the historical part of Santo Domingo… the rooms are clean and have AC, the Loby is really pretty and they have a good breakfast… The whole Staff is really friendly and helpful…
Contemporary room was clean, updated and very comfortable for sleeping. Hotel has a nice big courtyard in the middle which is a nice haven in the middle of Santo Domingo. Staff were very helpful.
The hotel is perfectly located in the historic centre of Santo Domingo. It is neat and clean. The bathroom was spacious and nice. The room itself had a nice design, and very comfortable bed.
Price was good for Dominican Republic. Most of the time we had more expensive hotels but quality was not much better. Hotel had warm water but water pressure was rather weak.
