Colorful Capital of Sun and Shopping
The Gran Canaria capital, Las Palmas, has everything that the Canaries stand for: year-round sun, fantastic beaches and great nightlife. However, the largest city of this volcanic island group is more than just a beach resort: its mix of traditional and modern makes it stand out from the crowd.
Colorful Colonial façades line Calle Triana, a top shopping street, while the Las Arenas shopping complex outside the city is much more contemporary in design. The El Muelle shopping center is near Parque Santa Catalina and the surrounding restaurants, bars and clubs are focal points of Las Palmas nightlife, together with the historic Vegueta district.
Vegueta is also home to Santa Ana cathedral, best viewed from the palm-lined square which houses the Canary Island Museum. Around the corner is the Casa Museo de Colón, where Columbus stayed en route to America. No doubt he sailed from huge Puerto de la Luz whose numerous vessels are guarded by a lighthouse and stone castle.
On the opposite side of the promontory is long Las Canteras beach, lined by a promenade providing great mountain views in both directions. The 5-star hotels by the beach are just some of Booking.com’s Las Palmas accommodations options, alongside cheap guesthouses and apartments, all connected by coastal road to Gran Canaria Airport.

There is so much to do in and around Las Palmas - e.g. the Guayadeque Ravine, botanical gardens, calderas, fishing villages, and the GC-200 coastal drive to the west for those up to the challenge of hairpin turns on high bluffs above the ocean! And, of course, in Las Palmas, you have all the modern conveniences of a big city - restaurants, stores (malls), hospitals, etc. We tapped only 10% of what there was to do so are already planning a return next year.

The city has a major car problem and getting anywhere is a nightmare. Walking from Las Canteras to the old town was not pleasant to say the least. Prepare for busy streets filled with car fumes and stinking of dog piss. There are parking garages, but beware, they can be very narrow and steep. On a plus side, the city center is quite picturesque and there are many cafés and restaurants, both at the old town and around Las Canteras. Although you might want to sit inside, unless you prefer the piss stench. Poema del Mar would be migh recommended attraction, the aquarium is truly stunning.AlžbětaCzech Republic - Scored 1010

If you plan hiking trips I recommend checking with the town hall first; some parks/monuments might be closed due to the weather conditions (heat or others). Las Palmas, as a city break is a nice place to spend three days or so. Maybe two if you enjoy rushing around on holiday. The old town is its nicest part arguably and there are plenty of museums and other touristic attractions to keep you occupied. Bus travel is really cheap and convenient by using the 'Mi Guagua' app, available on the apple and google app stores. Parts of the city can be a bit ugly and run down but that's the same with any capital city. It comes part and parcel of travel and exploration.JamesUnited Kingdom
