The Gran Canaria capital, Las Palmas, has everything that the Canaries stand for: year-round sun, fantastic beaches and great nightlife. However, the largest city of this volcanic island group is more than just a beach resort: its mix of traditional and modern makes it stand out from the crowd.
Colorful Colonial façades line Calle Triana, a top shopping street, while the Las Arenas shopping complex outside the city is much more contemporary in design. The El Muelle shopping center is near Parque Santa Catalina and the surrounding restaurants, bars and clubs are focal points of Las Palmas nightlife, together with the historic Vegueta district.
Vegueta is also home to Santa Ana cathedral, best viewed from the palm-lined square which houses the Canary Island Museum. Around the corner is the Casa Museo de Colón, where Columbus stayed en route to America. No doubt he sailed from huge Puerto de la Luz whose numerous vessels are guarded by a lighthouse and stone castle.
On the opposite side of the promontory is long Las Canteras beach, lined by a promenade providing great mountain views in both directions. The 5-star hotels by the beach are just some of Booking.com’s Las Palmas accommodations options, alongside cheap guesthouses and apartments, all connected by coastal road to Gran Canaria Airport.

It is a vibrant city with a great beach. Excellent value for money throughout and the transport links to explore the whole island are on your doorstep. You can mix the traditional Triana/Veguta with the trendy and very affordable Las Canteras. Great weather to take a break from the Northern European climate Oct-March.

If one thing made our holiday so good , it was hospitality of the local people, who were so helpful and served always with a smile even though our Spanish was very poor.
In the evenings we dinned in the local restaurant's in the old town which were always wonderful and very reasonable.
Every place we visited was clean and tidy , the locals take pride in their island.
Transport by buss was generally good , but often confusing in the Bus Stations for visitors. we where starting to understand some of it when it was time to go home.

Las Palmas GC is a big city.
Las Palmas GC is a big city. We were very north, at the top end of the Las Canteras beach, so there was a lot of walking. Some bits are nice, like the docks, along the beach, old town and various squares/parks and other bits are urban (shady, traffic, bins and graffiti). The weather was overall good. It's generally more cloudy in Las Palmas than the south of the island, but we did get a couple of hot sunny beach days. We made good use of the guaguas (pronounced wah-wah-s) [buses]. Transfer from the airport to Santa Catalina(docks area) was only €3 each but a little chaotic getting on. Google maps is your friend when planning. Also the Global bus company's website is handy.
We took the bus to Arucus nice little town. Head for the church to find the nice streets and cafes. There is a nice shaded park on the way then to the Rum distillery. €8 buys you the tour, at the end of which, you get 4 shots of rum, so we tried 8 different types. The honey rum with less sugar was our favourite. I paid another €8 for a shot of their 30 year old Captain Kidd, which was ... interesting. Galdar was another bus trip. Head for the historic old town. Nice area with a nice church. There was a small museum about Gran Canaria's history. Unfortunately the Painted Caves museum was closed. The onward journey on to Agete (well, Puerto de las Nieves) was less fun as we missed the stop and 5 miles up the road has an angry bus driver demanding more money. 15+ miles later along the beautiful, rugged, scary coastal mountain road a hero passenger pointed out a stop we should bail out and wait for the return bus. We missed the sunset in the port but saw it a bit higher up in the mountains on the way back. We took an organised cross island tour earlier in the week (brilliant hosted by Pavel), so we've seen a lot of the island in our short stay. A week is not really long enough for a first visit.

Las Palmas was a lovely city, a lovely mix of old, new historic, cultural and trendy.
We went to explore the different neighbourhoods and local towns up in the hills. Amazing bus service all over the island. Cheap and easy to use. One of the best we've used.
Lots of bars, restaurants and cafes often tucked away from the main tourist areas in quieter residential parts. Look where the locals go!
A great city to explore and enjoy with warm days and no mozzies in November.

My favorite places were the city center; the various markets throughout the city; the residential area between Plaza de Feria and Parque San Telmo where I stayed, and the the Old Town (Veguete.) Playa Canteras is wonderful too. I enjoyed the traditional Canarian singing and dancing at Casa Canaria on Sunday morning. I often ate in my suburb at various little restaurants that serve traditional Spanish and Canarian food. The modern and very reliable bus service and the various bus routes made it very easy to move to any part of the city. Next time round I will not avoid anything, and I urge fellow tourists to mingle with the very pleasant local people - attend the local Sunday markets in the nearby smaller towns; go on a day tour to see the rest of this amazing island, and make use of the special municipal bus tickets that are available, e.g. for a very reasonable amount one gets 20 rides to any area in the city, so you can really be adventurous and explore different parts of Las Palmas. The streets and pavements are clean and well-maintained, so walking around is quite easy and very safe. If you get a bit lost, most local people will point you in the right direction and despite the language barrier you will be fine.

A wonderful stay in a beautiful place. The pictures do not do the scenery justice. Absolutely magnificent. A truly stunning part of the island. Gran Canaria is so much more than sunshine and beaches.
Patricia was a wonderful host. Very attentive and great communication. The house has everything you need. Orange and lemon trees in the grounds. 🍋 A great location to check out the true beauty of the island. Thank you for your hospitality. 😊
Perfectly located in the Center of Las Palmas, 5 Minutes Walk away from the bus Station to all Sites of the Island, incl. the Airport. Also 2 minutes away from the beach and surrounded by Supermarkes for daily needs.
It was very pleasant to have a kitchen in the Hotel room so that i was able to prepare breakfast before starting the day.
I visited Gran Canaria first and foremost to do cycling.
