Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.

The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around the Chateau Comtal, however spolit with the array of shops selling souvenirs. We visited first May Bank Holiday week, and found many restaurants closed, and the menus limited to the same at each restaurant. The town has a square with restaurants, supermarket and cafes, again with limited menus.
Canal du Midi, towpath was over grown and a lot of homeless people sitting around drinking. The boat trips were not running at this time. The river was pretty but limited to walking along as there is no path..

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could navigate by car in the city center of a medieval town. Six inches of clearance on either side of our rental car as we cautiously crept down the one way streets. No parking except in an underground garage ten minutes walk away.
The castle is a twenty minute walk from city center, the last 1/4 mile uphill. Great to view the citadel walls and turrets from a distance. Inside the walls, hard to tell which cobblestones and masonry were from the middle ages, and which were 25 year old patches. Lots of ticky-tacky souvenir shops, some appealing bistros/restaurants, a fabulous 800 year old church, and lots and lots of visitors in late April. Can’t imagine what it will be like this summer.

Carcassonne is probably done in 2 days, one for old, one for new. If you are in the old town I would definitely book a restaurant for evening meal as they were often fully booked when we asked, and this is April. Also this time of year we noticed it was very quiet in the week but everything seemed to open up on Friday for the weekend.

Carcassonne is a small walkable city with a romantic castle and a lot of history! Lots of restaurants and shops to explore. Enjoy the outdoor market on Saturday morning, between the old walled city and the "new" city. Bring good walking shoes! Friendly and helpful people even if you don't speak French.

First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle,...
First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle, listed on UNESCO World Heritage registry, Its history is well documented and presented, the staff at the castle are all so friendly and kind, they tried to give me very personal time during the visit even though my exit after the closing hour was a bit protracted because I had taken a wrong "route" - wandered into the last section of the visit first and did the exploration in the reverse order! The town itself was bucolic and relaxed, clean, serene, and safe. All the people I encountered (* except one lady, who probably was not from this town!) from shops to restaurants to tourist office to streets were very pleasant and honest (when I innocently picked up oranges to buy in a basket, for example, the fruit shop lady spontaneously inspected each pieces carefully and pointed out one of them was slightly damaged, and went to pick up a better replacement for me, which she didn't have to do!) There were a lots of region specific products, as well as international products (such as Italian Truffles, Italian fur products!), interesting and delicious food to eat, and the climate is generally much warmer than other parts of France. Sunny happy rational place like this, which retained "good old France" aspects restores in a visitor's heart rare hopes for humanity! It also seemed that there is a good size of international community with expats who settled down. You can experience exotic encounters here, so, I would not say this town is a closed up, hermetic, mono-cultural location, nor it is xenophobic.
Great host Emmanuelle was friendly helpful and enthusiastic about her establishment .
The hotel was well placed for the Medieval City and The New Town
Emmanuelle has restored the property in a very sympathetic fashion .We had a lovely room on the second with a large walk in shower and light comfortable neds.
Breakfast was made with local products . Emmanuelle sat with ourselves and other guests .who were French which was interesting and convivial .
Carcassone is a beautiful city and this is a great local hotel to enjoy the experience
The best feature of the apartment is the incredible view of the medieval city. You can sit at the window and see the city during sunrise and sunset. It's really spectacular.
The accommodation is excellent and is very tastefully designed and contains everything you need. The bed is super comfortable and the rain shower is great.
The apartment is very convenient for the train station especially as I had an early train.
The host is super responsive and nice and welcoming, check in was easy.
Highly recommended.
Wonderful 3rd floor apartment with balcony and views to the Medieval City.
Two large and comfortable bedrooms, one with a sofa as well.
Super clean bathroom and toilet.
Open plan sitting room, dining and kitchen area. Very well equipped kitchen with microwave, oven/hob, dishwasher, coffee machine.
A few minutes walk to the Medieval City and 15 minutes walk to the old town. Excellent range of restaurants and supermarkets in close vicinity.
Great location in the center of town. Many thanks to Lesa who manages the property. She emailed a message that she would be able to pick us up at the train station. The apartment is clean, nicely furnished and has great views of an old city square with a well . A great place to experience the medieval city. Staying inside the city walls is amazing Many thanks to Lesa who helped us get to the bus stop.
Hotel is very close to the medieval castle/town known as "La Cite" which is the main tourist attraction in Carcassonne. Room was relatively spacious and easy to keep cool in the heat of the day. Hotel is small so I saw no evidence of an elevator. Breakfast buffet had plentiful food in a light and airy setting. Restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating is about a minute uphill from the hotel
The hotel met all of our needs. Situated between the Cite (old town) and the main town you have easy walking access to both, plus the bars and restaurants right outside were lovely too. The room had everything we needed including a TV and, despite being on the street side, was quiet. The staff were helpful, friendly and lovely.
Great location - right by the medieval city. The property was very clean and cozy. The hosts were exceptionally hospitable and helpful, very fast communication. There even was plenty of food for breakfast which was a pleasant surprise. Would stay here again and rate 11/10 if I could :)
The hotel location is perfect. The view from our balcony of the old city was stunning especially when it is lit up at night.
Our room was very clean and the beds very comfy. There was secure parking which is a must for us. The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly
Lovely little boutique hotel in a fantastic location within walking distance to Le Cite. Comfortable room with a view of the medieval city. Paid for breakfast which was hearty and typically French. The little swimming pool and patio area gave a feeling of intimacy.
The location was excellent. Between the old town and the medieval city.
The apartment was clean and simply furnished although more than 4 people would be a push for sitting and dining comfortably.
Wifi was a bonus as was not listed as being available.
The location is perfect. Is is just a short walk to the medieval city. The little pool was clean and sunny and the bed was very comfy. The hotel bar had a good range of drinks. Although it is on a road the windows effectively block out the noise.
This hotel is managed superbly by Jean-Michel, a stand out in all our stay in France. Communication was excellent and provision for garage a bonus. Room and bathroom great. Lovely cafes out the door with views of the fortification of Carcassone.
Due to renovation, Mercure Carcassonne upgrade our stay at MGallery Hotel de la Cite which was fabulous stay at that fine hotel. Those reviews also match Mercure Carcassonne La Cite as I always stay at the hotel whenever I am in Carcassonne

Very nice view from balcony over Carcassone. The host was helpful and talkative, he provided us with the best croissants from a local bakery shop. His place has got super comfy beds and was clean :-)
We had a very large room which was very comfortable and the hotel is very close to the old city. The hotel restaurant was excellent too. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Beautiful hotel, clean rooms and very friendly and helpful staff. The location is perfect, right in front of the walled city. Would definitely stay there again
Location is fantastic - right below the walled town. Lots of parking at the hotel. Had an amazing terrace off our bedroom overlooking the old town walls.
