The Westgate's an elegant Victorian villa retaining many period features. It was built in 1880 as a private house on the parklands and carriage drive of Torre Abbey. Today, it's been skilfully modernised, decorated, and furnished to ensure the charm of the old house remains. Whether staying for a short break, holiday, business trip or conference you have the assurance of a Visit England assessed 4-star guest accommodation and the silver award for quality of accommodation, breakfast and service. You can be confident of an enjoyable stay in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There’s a breakfast room, guests’ lounge, well-stocked bar & a range of bedrooms, many with far reaching views over Torquay. Unusually for Torquay, there's a good car park and free super-fast Wi-Fi everywhere. Breakfast includes a buffet where you can help yourself to cereals, muesli, yoghurts, toast, fresh fruit, fruit juices and tea and coffee as you like. Then order taken at your table a cooked quality full English breakfast using locally sourced produce. We can cater for special dietary requirements with a bit of notice. We serve evening meals in the dining room please contact us to have sample menus sent on.
Our favourite walk from the Westgate is to cross the road in front of The Westgate and walk though the gates of Torre Abbey. Walk past his magnificent building and the Spanish Barn and you will see the Torbay laid out before you with magnificent views over to Brixham. Keep walking passed the International Riviera conference and leisure centre into Torre Abbey park with its magnificent formal tropical gardens, café and sports like pitch and putt, bowls and crazy golf. Cross the sea road at the bottom and walk along the firm sand of the beach - having a craft paddle. Restaurants and bars start to appear as does the marina as you wonder who owns such splendid boats. The palm tress and flowers are breath-taking as you approach the pavilion and the harbour. Stop for lunch on the harbour side and people watch. Then cross over and walk through the shopping streets back to The Westgate and have a drink in the bar.
The Westgate has a central location but is in a quieter tree-lined road in a conservation area.The Westgate is one of the closet guest houses to Torquay train station and there’s a bus stop right outside that gets you to the harbour, shops and the attractions of Torbay. A ten minute stroll gets you to the sea front and beach or the main shopping area. Another 5-10 minutes gets you to the Princess Theatre, marina, the bustling picturesque harbour area with fabulous places to eat and evenings out. It's one of the closest B & Bs for the Riviera International Centre for conferences and events and Torre Abbey Spanish Barn wedding venue and annual International Agatha Christie Festival. The English Riviera has more things to see and do than any other English seaside resort and is a UNSECO Geopark . Torquay has a purple flag for the safety of its nightlife, and has been voted by Tripadvisor as England's top seaside destination year after year. Some of the attractions include stunning beaches, theatres, model village, steam trains, historic houses, museums, zoos, Kent's Cavern prehistoric caves, Brixham's historic harbour and easy access to Dartmoor National Park.
