Beppu is a great place to visit for a day or two where you will be fully occupied. The city itself is really interesting with many onsen to visit. Lively bars and restaurants are also available but not to the same level as the big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto as part of a tour of Japan. I thoroughly recommend visiting the city. We travelled from Osaka on an overnight ferry which was really good fun and took the train from Beppu with great ease.

A pleasant city to spend 1-2 nights. However, go only if you are into onsen (hot spring bath). Otherwise, there is really nothing much else to do. If you are the type who do not like public baths, opt for a ryokan with private bath. If your budget permits, opt for the kaiseki meal (set meal) served by the ryokan. The Beppu Jigoku (Beppu Hells) is too commercialised for my liking. I'd recommend you start with Umi Jigoku and pick 1 or 2 more you like it. All of the "hells" are within walking distance from Umi Jigoku. Otherwise, you can skip the rest and spend more time walking and exploring Kannawa area (look out for Route 218). The Jigoku Mushi (steamed meal) is not worth the money. You'd be better off patronising a local yakiniku joint - Oita prefecture is famous for its beef, chicken and mushroom; all of these taste great when grilled over charcoal.

Beppu has a great vibe, especially the area around Beppu Station and the area near the "hells". The sight of water vapour rising between all the buildings is truly something. But aside from the hells and the hot springs there is not that much more to do in the city itself. So 2-3 days should definetely be enough for people who have a limited amount of time in Japan. The city of Yufu one hour busride from Beppu and certainly worth a visit. There are a couple of other great places in Oita Prefecture worth visiting but those are a little bit hard to access without a car.JulianGermany - 10Scored 10

Beppu is one of the best cities I visited, it is a city is in the middle of sea and mountain. There is a lot of Onsen where you can be easy to find around the city, Beppu is called " City of Onsen". You can relax and release any daily tired at the onsen bath (especially if you bath onsen pool outside) Furthermore, you can go to viewpoint to see the Beppu city and mountain view. The seven hells of Beppu (Jigoku) are really great to fill a day. You can have a nice walk along the shoreline and the mall near the bay offers a great shopping opportunity. There are a few good restaurants that you can enjoy. The neighborhood around the Jigoku is quite nice, the rest of Beppu not so much. Two or three days are enough for this town.MarcellGermany

There is no shower, but they give you towels to use in public baths (and there are tons of them around). Speaking of which, the location is amazing, it's in the coolest area of Beppu where steam is coming out of the ground on the streets. There is a big popular onsen in 5 minute walk and smaller ones just around the corner. The owner was very nice and told me about the best onsens and sightseeing spots in the area.
