Get there early and head to the Osuary complex so you can have it all to yourself. Most people go the other way. The night show was cool, but not required, the daytime is a requirement for every explorer!

Stay in Valladolid and drive-- or better yet stay in Piste- and walk to the ruins and get there when they open at 8am. On the Sunday morning we arrived at 830am, there were less than 25 people that we could see-- total-- and no vendors yet. Our photos of the main pyramids have literally zero other people in the background, and we saw lots of colorful birds and enjoyed the empty grounds.
By the time we left at 11:30am, there were 3 or 4 thousand people there, mostly arriving on tour buses from Cancun, and the vendors were aggressive and noisy and it was less appealing of a destination. YES get there as early as possible.

Always impressive to visit but too crowded and touristy the last couple of times. The parking lot was only available for tour vans and buses so struggled outside to find a parking spot. Had to walk 600 meters to get to the ticket booth. Next time I'd go as early as they open to avoid crowds, heat and parking issues.

Chichen Itza is amazing!
Chichen Itza is amazing! Well worth suffering the heat and bugsI (even in February)
There are lots of vendors selling their wares. I've read that they are not usually handmade, which would explain why so many things were only ONE Dollar! Heard someone say not to buy wooden masks etc as they would not pass customs.
Bring: hat, bug spray, sunblock, water.
C.I. is very isolated. There are tour buses that take you from Cancun to CI.
It's a full day and usually about $120 dollars. Be careful not to confuse dollars and mexican pesos. At this time the peso is about 20 cents so 100 pesos is $5 dollars. I recommend bringing a debit card and some mexican $. ( Can be purchased beforehand at AAA)
Wear sturdy closed toe shoes as it is very dusty and rocky. No stairs, however. If you take a tour, they will feed you lunch about 2 pm. Bring snacks if you are accustomed to eating lunch earlier.
Be on top of your email and messages as the tour originally said they would pick me up at my hotel, but changed to another hotel the day prior to the tour.
If you don't take a tour, I would rent a car. Bus and taxi connections aren't the best. I took a taxi from Mayalands hotel to Valladodid for about $35. Then I took a bus to Cancun central bus station, then a taxi to the airport. I spent about $75 and it took the better part of the day.
Taxi's from Mayalands to the airport run about $200 US.
BTW, the tour takes you to a cenote where you can swim. Bring your suit and a towel, plus water shoes. The trek at ILKIL was about 100 stairs and slippery.
One last thing, as of February 2022, one must wear a mask in Mexico ALL THE TIME.

It’s definitely worth it booking a tour guide as there’s so many details that need to be pointed out in order to appreciate the experience. Though most guides seemed to be asking for 900 pesos, which felt too steep. So we were actually very lucky to find a guide called Miguel who goes around in a little car (as he’s disabled), who charged us 500 pesos and gave us an amazing tour.
Also, you’ll find there’s LOTS of art & souvenirs for sale, and they’ll quote you double the price if you can’t speak Spanish… so I’d suggest waiting until the end and buying whatever you like after you’ve seen all the stalls and haggle!

This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained.
This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained. Kukulcan is amazing but you cannot access or climb it. Doing this ruin with a guide was essential as the experience would have been much less without the knowledge a guide has.
Fine hotel in Piste. We took the a la carte breakfast options, which looked better than the buffet breakfast. Great location to go to Chichen Itza (walking distance if you do not carry heavy bags). Also fine to walk into Piste for restaurant options.
The hotel offers Chichen Itza tickets at 100 pesos more each as service fee. They were open about the price difference and also they told us if we would go early that you would probably not need to wait in line for the regular ticket sale.
The location was ideal: close to Chichen Itza and the cenote Ik kil was literally on the other side of the rode. You can simply put on your swimming suite and walk over there. Thanks to the location we could begin our visit to Chichen Itza early and in the afternoon we went swimming in the cenote.
We also liked the "natural pool". The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant where youcan eat or you can take the collectivo to the nearby village where you have more choice.
Clean, Comfortable bed, good working a/c. large enough space with ability to hang stuff up. Safe enclosed location, with enclosed parking within their garden area.. that was really nice. It was nice to have fresh coffee and some bread (loaf cake and croissant type bread) in the morning provided. It was next door to the OXXO which is a clean market (like a 7-11). It was only a 5 minute drive to Chichen Itza parking lot so it was super convenient for getting an early start to the day.
Huge room, nice pool. Friendly supportive staff. Dream-location near the temples, with the sounds of the jungle.
Restaurant appeared to be very good and we returned there even. We don't do that normally. Also, during the day
you can have lovely snacks/drinks at the pool which is great when you come back after some hours at Chichen Itza, which
is really nearby and you can be there, long before the crowds come. We loved it !
Nice clean rooms in older hotel. More like a motel with connected rooms opening to the outside. Good restaurant, simple good breakfast. Friendly helpful staff. Two clean swimming pools. It's in the jungle across from a Cenote, and ten minutes to the entrance to Chichen Itza. Only down side was low or no wifi in the room I had to use outdoor seating near the office.
We loved our stay at the Mayaland over the Winter Solstice. Our room had an epic view of the Observatory at Chichen Itza and the hotel is so beautifully laid out with exquisite grounds and excellent restaurant. Be sure to watch the show in the observatory for a special treat before visiting Chichen Itza for a deeper perspective.
The pool, the spacious room and bathroom and the breakfast is great. The staff is really friendly and helpful. There is a ping-pong table in the garden that you can use. We rented bikes (100 meters from the hotel) and we where at Chichén Itzà in 10 minutes (about 2 km).
This is the perfect stay for people intending to visit Chichén Itza as early birds (which I strongly recommend). The hotel looks great, there is a large pool in the middle of the hotel area which makes a great place for leisure and vacation photos.
the hotel iis locate very close to chichen itza,
we got a room near the pool. the pool is nice.
The staff help us in everything we needs.
there are no alot of people so it was very quiet, and peiceful place in the middle of the forest.
The hotel is in beautiful buildings in landscaped grounds and really close to Chichen Itza. The staff were very helpful and arranged our trip to the site and organised a guide (all very reasonable). They provided transport too.
Luis is an amazing host, kindhearted , superfriendly and made us feel like home! magnificent host, amazing breakfast, good location. Also Luis gave us good suggestions while visiting Chichen Itza and nearby cenotes. Thank you!
The pool at night is spectacular. It's an historic building so near Chichen Itza. The food was pretty good and the staff is wonderful. The gardens are also stellar.
Really close to Chichen Itza. Nice, and Clean. Nothing fancy. Has everything you need from a comfortable bed to a hot shower. The pool was a big hit with the kids.
the property was very clean and welcoming.
the bungalow is very nice and the surrounding is exceptional. only 5mn car ride from
chichen itza and Ik Kil cenote.
Such kind hosts and very relaxing atmosphere. Very close to Chichén Itzá and walking distance to the restaurants and cafes in Pisté and Tinum. Very firm bed.
