I had my wallet stolen on the bus to Merida, and lots of fraudulent charges were made and they helped connect to the police who brought us to the right place to make the theft report I need for the bank. They also had great food recommendations.
Location is fantastic, and the pool up top is such a nice lookout point.

Each area of town was a completely different experience. It was Tulum meets Munich but then there were 400 year Spanish colonial estates in bright colors draped with jungle fauna. Some areas were dense and chaotic but felt like an adventure. Other areas were rich in opulence that felt accessible. Oh and the food scene was incredible. So many excellent restaurants and so many more excellent cocktails. The an hour drive out of the city in any direction was a different eco adventure. I can’t wait to go back. Someone make me rich so I can rent a place there. Thank you.

This is the beauty of Mexico: cultural events every night of the year and a lower crime rate than Idaho
Al pastor tacos on the south side of Mercado Galvez, Lechon tacos at Lupitas in Santiago park, amazing italian at Tratto in Santa Lucia, and elote ice cream on the Soutwest corner of the Zocalo.

Merida is a wonderful, safe city in the Yucatan away from the beach tourist community. Great food, colonial architecture, and access to Maya ruins and a mellower coast. We had a exquisite meal at Yerba Santa Merida. Be sure to see the flamingos in Celestun, the ancient city of Uxmal, and take a dip in a cenote. Best to have a bunch of pesos for out of the city excursions.

Merida is the second safest city in North America. Safer than any city in the U.S. Second only to Quebec, Canada. And for the same reason: an indigenous population speaking its own language (Mayan), where crooks can't come and hide.
And it's one of the oldest cities in the Americas. Great history, and a great base to visit the wonderful old Mayan cities nearby. It does get quite hot in the summer so consider visiting in spring, fall and especially winter. Wonderful people wonderful food, a must visit addition to your bucket list. If you go, you'll go back every year.

This colonial city is a hidden jewel. I “discovered” it 11 months ago and have already been here on 3 occasions. The people of Merida all glad we are here and it shows. The food is beyond belief! Five stars ⭐️ and affordable. But above all, this is a very safe city with a treasure trove of cultural treasures readily shared with visitors. Wear comfy shoes if you (like me) love to walk and peek around. If you can’t, no worries. Taxis and Uber are very affordable. Hot in the summer and cool nights in winter but overall very pleasant. Clean, safe, beautiful and historic. MERIDA IS SIMPLY AWESOME.

Merida is a gorgeous colonial town in the heart of Yucatan. It is a easy jumping off point for day trips such as Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Valladolid, and a ton of cenotes and haciendas nearby. The city itself is very safe and the food options are abundant and all very tasty. We found ourselves walking a lot because we wanted to see all the building facades and check out a lot of the history.

Merida offers frequent events and festivals, as well as having plenty of historical buildings. There is a plethora of restaurants and hotels to satisfy every traveler and an outgoing ex pat community. It's easy to take a side trip to ruins or cenotes. You don't need a lot of Spanish, but polite phrases are very appreciated. If you are there for a longer trip, check out the Merida English Library. They not only have books, but classes and tours.

Historical city with lots of wonderful restaurants featuring Yucatecan cuisine.
I loved walking around the Municipal Market (Mercado)...so much to see and buy there
Side trips to Valladolid and cenotes, and Xcambo and Xtampu were interesting and reasonably priced.
I also took a cooking class from Sofia at her home...a fun day with excellent Yucatecan food.

Merida is the cultural capital of the Yucatan. It is full of interesting places to visit and has many cultural events. The Plaza Grande is the heart of Merida and an interesting place to explore. The Paseo de Montejo is a wonderful boulevard to walk along. There are many different types of restaurants in Merida and the food is wonderful. We got around Merida using uber, which was efficient and inexpensive. There are day trips out of Merida which are interesting. We went to Chichen Itza and also to Celestun. We had a terrific guide to Chichen Itza which made that tour especially memorable.

Merida is safe, walkable with a tranquil vibe and has a lot to offer: Ruins, haciendas, cenotes, live music (sometimes in the streets), symphony, jazz, Mayan cultural experiences, great street food in markets, elegant restaurants with Mayan, Mexican and European menus expertly prepared and presented. Don't miss the reenactment of the Mayan ball game on Saturday nights, the Museo de Chocolate and swimming in the cenotes-especially at Mucuyche.

What will stay with me most about Merida is the friendliness of the people. I stayed for two weeks to brush up on my Spanish at a wonderful little language school (La Casita). I did not have a single negative experience. People were warm, welcoming and kind. For a purely tourist visit, there is not much to do in Merida after a few days, but for business or study, it is perfect. A visit to the "cenotes" far exceeded my expectations. I recommend a private tour with Alejandra (Ale Tours). She was friendly and professional, and also offered much more competitive prices than other tour companies.

We trained there which is a great way to travel (Tren Maya is beautiful) but it seems they make transportation from the train stations difficult by design. It's actually quite ridiculous. We waited for over an hour for the bus and still didn't have an option into the historical area of Merida, which I'd imagine most tourists would be visiting.
The town itself has a ton to see and do - highly recommend visiting - 2 nights, 3 days is perfect!

This our third time visiting Merida and we had a great time. We walked everywhere (20,000 steps a day+-) visiting house tours, markets, restaurants, museums, art studios, and parks. What we love most are the warm vibe you get from everyone. It’s a great place. The society there is so family oriented with families out late being together and talking and not looking at their phones. You can get anywhere in a uber for a few dollars. Our favorite restaurants were Oliva, EL Catrin, Ancona, and Micaela. There are so many great coffee shops and bakeries, one of favorites is Pan and Koffee. The pastries are so good.

Merida is a great historic location. We bused from Playa Del Carmen, great bus ride, easy. From Merida you can go to the beach at Progreso - 30 minutes north. We bused to Campeche - 2 hours, spent the night - recommend Gamma Campeche Malecon on the ocean front. Walled city, European feel to both Campeche and Merida. From Merida bus tour to see Izumal, with Mayan Ruins, X-Cajum for massive Cenote, Chichen Itza for Mayan Ruins and the city of Valladolid. Merida has lots of great restaurants and parks. Merida is safe!!! Travelers can walk everywhere and immerse themselves in the culture. Great restaurant scene. Fabulous shops with authentic attire from Mexican artisans. We traveled between Merida and Campeche by the local bus AVO - and it was safe, clean and affordable. Many fabulous day trips can be booked to Mayan ruins or the coast from the city. Plan to stay for several days.

I stayed in Merida for 9 days and it was a perfect base for exploring the Yucatan and has plenty of its own sights in the city to enjoy. It's a completely safe city, even for solo travelers. I never felt the least bit unsafe in any neighborhood even at night. Lots of great restaurants, museums, architecture, and culture, especially music and dance. It's a good base for taking day trips to nearby cities like Valladolid or Izamal, or the many Mayan archaological sites and cenotes for swimming. There is bus service in the city, but walking is by far the easiest and most enjoyable way to explore the city.

We stayed on Calle 60 in Merida Centro. 5 nights. So much to do along this stretch: shopping, eating, drinking, entertainment...
Walked the area at all hours of the day and night. Never felt any concerns.
Easy day excursions to Uxmul Archaeological Zone (more dynamic Mayan zone than Chichen Itsa), Hacienda Yaxcopoil, Mali (great traditional food at El Principe Tutul Xiu), Izamal.
Time was spent with friends and family as traveled to Merida for a wedding.
4.5 hour bus ride from Cancun international airport. Train is an option, as is a rental van and driver. (Booked with daytrip.com for van from Merida to Cancun airport with a stop in Izamal.)

Merida is an exciting place, filled with life, activities, venues...and tourists! We were amazed at the number of expats and tourists. It's also a dense city, and the noise was a bit overwhelming. We stayed in the center area, and it was a bit too much for us. We had been in Merida 15 years before, and our memories were of a quieter, more elegant place. But they say "you can't go home again." There are many positive things about it, and it is a very safe city. If we were to return, we would look to stay in a quieter area and go into the center for activities.

I love the walkability of the old part of Centro Merida. Lots of cafes and restaurants in all different price ranges. Some of the colonial buildings have been restored and some look like ruins which adds to the interest and intrigue. I felt very safe walking any time of the day or evening.

In Merida I felt safe, secure and had a genuine feeling of being is "true" Mexico. I walked from the hotel all the way down the main street of Merida at 9:30pm at night with absolute feeling of calmness in the air. Fantastic upscale and local culinary options in all cuisines. Absolutely fantastic beach in Progresso near by (20 minutes from Merida). One of the cleanest airports I have been in the past 10 years... :)

Merida is a great city to visit. It has a very large historical core with many interesting buildings. Its mixture of Mayan, Spanish, Lebanese and Cuban cultures make for very interesting culinary experiences (it has many great restaurants). It's also a good starting point for exploring Mayan archaeological sites and nearby beaches. Getting around the city is super easy without a car. It's very walkable and Uber is cheap and very reliable.

Merida is a very charming colonial town. Lots to do and lots to see. There was a "Merida Fest" going on that featured music by live bands in the downtown in the evening, free, and lots of people got together to listen and dance. Great shopping! Great starting point for day trips to locations like the Mayan ruins at Uxmal, UNESCO reserve at Celestun, cenotes, etc. Lots of museums. All the people are really nice and eager to help out.

It's a great colonial city, with the new train coming thru it's a great home base, they have awesome parks an city offers great activities every night throughout the city center for entertainment, great new modes of transportation including a new electric train in city, the whole city is getting a renovation so great stuff coming as well and new station for the Maya Train so you can travel to other states as well. Lots of taxi drivers also serve as guides so ask them about Tours you have in mind,they offer great options and services if you want a more personal experience.

Merida is a beautiful vibrant colonial city with great food and tradition plus incredibly friendly people. The new food corridor once completed will be a wonderful addition. Then Maya will also be a great way to use it as a launch pad for exploring more of the Yucatan

It is a beautiful city. The architecture is incredible. Some of the most beautiful colonial mansions you could imagine. Some have been converted to restaurants that are spectacular.
In October it was very hot and humid. At times the heat was stifling. Soon Tren Maya will be operational. I will return but during January through April. Other than that, it is a special place. I bought a jipijapa for the sun.

I loved everything about this place, from check in to leaving with hearts full. We spent Christmas far away from home on our honeymoon and it felt so special being here.
Griselda was awesome through and through.
The breakfast everyday was different and lovely. I hardly say I will visit one place twice but definitely coming back to Mexico one day for Villa Orquidea❤️

This is the nicest place I have been in my trip to Mexico. Nicely decorated and very comfortable rooms. But the special thing about this place is how the owners make you feel wellocome. They go one extra mile to ensure you have all the info on the city you need and also helped us out in organising a trip to uxmal. I loved this place and I hope to go back soon

Room was comfortable but could’ve used more pillows, 1 pillow per person is not enough with a hard bed. WiFi was fantastic and very reliable, some of the best WiFi during my stay in Mexico. Good aircon. Didn’t use kitchen in room but it looked decent.

Loved the aesthetic and the comfort of the room. If there wasn't so much to do in merida we could have stayed in the room the whole time :) breakfast was amazing and the whole ambience was so relaxing. Best night's sleep we have had in mexico!

One of our favourite stops during our Mexico trip. Staff were so wonderful - helpful and kind, going above any beyond. We did their cooking class which I'd recommend, and poolside was fab.
