The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

Bustling, compact market town full of interesting places to eat and shop, surrounded by truly exceptional scenery. Beautiful park and gardens a very short walk from the centre. Fascinating castle, country house, lakes all a short drive or ride in tourist bus...or horse-drawn carriage. A great place to use as a base to explore Kerry's beautiful scenery by car / bike / service bus. Lovely ride in horse and buggy from Ross Castle much cheaper than Mucross Abbey. Mucross estate was fabulous and we all enjoyed looking at the old farm buildings Great walk to the Torc waterfall. I had 4 nights in Killarney and could have stayed a little longer to enjoy more time around town. I hired a bike and went around Killarney National Park ( Muckross House and Abby and Torc waterfall) then did 3 day tours with Deros (very good company no complaints)1. The ring of Kerry 2. An incredible, beautiful place, full of history and culture. I didn't have enough time to explore the places. Each place has its own charm. I liked the Muckross Abbey restaurant; impeccable service and good food. Very convenient location. I hiked around the park and rented a bike at Killarney bike rental.
