El Calafate is a small city in Argentinean Patagonia, situated in the foothills of the Andes and on the shores of Argentino Lake. Blending colourful wooden houses and Alpine-influenced architecture, it is the gateway to the Glaciers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in El Calafate and surroundings, from 5-star hotels to cheap hostels.
The area was originally inhabited by the ‘Aonikenk’ people, while the modern settlement grew at the beginning of the 20th century as a refuge along the wool trade route, taking its name from the native blueberry bush known as ‘Calafate’. The town was founded by the Argentinean government in 1927 to promote the colonisation of the area, but its development started only after the creation of the National Park, in 1937.
The famous Perito Moreno Glacier is 80 km from the city. Mount Fitz Roy, the small town of El Chaltén, the romantic Onelli Bay, Lago del Desierto, and Roca Lake are some of the impressive landmarks that make up Argentina‘s 2nd-largest natural reservation. If you want to experience Patagonia’s languid vastness and tranquillity, try some of El Calafate’s rural accommodation or ‘estancias’.

The personnel at the hotel was tremendously helpful.
The personnel at the hotel was tremendously helpful. They helped me in a difficult situation where I had to buy airline tickets on an emergency basis. They helped organize an excursion, a trip to Perito Moreno and to organize transportation for my group of 13 to and from the airport.
My room was beautiful; in fact, all of our rooms were wonderful.
This is a quiet place.

The only thing to really do is visit the glacier.
The only thing to really do is visit the glacier. I thought we could do more to make an extra day worthwhile but the tours to visit the other parts of the park were super expensive. All tours in the area were way too pricey and you can’t really do anything else without a tour. The restaurants are good, but in general I think Chaltén has a lot more to do and see.

The trip to the Glacier was memorable, the people friendly and helpful. Restaurants were excellent and you could walk anywhere in town easily from any hotel in the central area. We had a lot of fun here! Highly recommend the Patagonia Queen Boutique Hotel. Rafael will take great care of you!

I am a tour guide and I come to calafate with groups, at the end of my work I have a day or two of rest for myself. it is a beautiful city. although it should improve its internet service (it is regular everywhere) and they have too many dogs loose in the streets although they are not aggressive.

El Calafate is the place to be for visiting the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. We did the Big Ice Adventure with Hiele Aventura and it was amazing. The town itself is fine but very touristy.
The waffle café elba'r and the Patagonia Brewery were the best places we went to eat and drink.
The Glaciarium was interesting, a very text-heavy museum, lots to read. We went to the Ice Bar there too, however I'd already been to the same concept in another city - if you've been to one, you've been to them all.

I did not like this hotel.
I did not like this hotel. It was miserable and did not live up to its advertising in booking at all. No good cuisine , no hot tub as advertised This is not a 5@4 star whitely and you are advertising it incorrectly
Lucas and his wife were very friendly and welcomed us very nicely. Lucas speaks English well and helped us with many suggestions, and we talked a lot. It was a pleasure to entertain conversation with him. The rooms are clean and spacious. The breakfast is enough to start the day. And if you need you can keep your staff in the fridge. If we will have the chance in the future to come back to El Calafate, we will for sure stay here. 100% best spot guarantee! Thank you again! Cheers from Switzerland 🇨🇭
This property is walking distance to the main street in El Calafate where all the restaurants and shopping are. It was nice to have the room to spread out a bit after sharing hotel rooms for several days. We also enjoyed having the kitchen so we could fix our own christmas dinner and breakfasts. Rosa met us and showed us the apartment and gave us tips for where to eat out. She was very helpful and easy to reach. The apartment and building were very clean.
Booked a whole dorm as private room for me and husband. A little strange sleeping in bunk beds but there's a great vibe in the communal areas, the rooms are very warm, the view is amazing and everything is extremely clean. Breakfast was varied and good value for money. Ate dinner at the hostel one night and although the price was approaching restaurant level (albeit with a free wine) the grill was some of the best we've had in Argentina.
All food and drinks in the hotel were delicious. Each plate was presented beautifully and extra attention given to every little detail. Valentin, the manager and Estefan the front office representative were both incredibly helpful and warm and welcoming. All of the Eolo team were attentive and smiling 100% of the time, making us truly feel welcome and at home on an AMAZING property. One of the best hotel experiences we have ever had.
The perfect place to stay in El Calafate. The host was very friendly and the check in / check out was quick and easy. The apartment is great and has lots of additional touches that other places don't have. Free Netflix, fast WiFi (for Argentina), shampoo, soap, full kitchen for cooking, heater, fridge stocked with beer and drinks to buy if you need. Very clean and comfy. I would definitely stay here again.
The staff were outstanding, especially Thomas , who helped with a tech issue I was having with my phone. The hotel was exceptionally clean, the sheets were of very good quality, and I had plenty of plump comfy pillows on my bed. Breakfast was the best I've had in southern Argentina, with a buffet offering that even included gluten-free options. Overall, it was my favorite hotel experience on my trip!
Wonderful view from the hostel. Very spacious place. It was low season when we came, so we practically had the whole hostel to ourselves :D Great wifi for work.
*most importantly, this hostel did not take advantage of us as tourists. We didn't even have to show Booking.com terms. They charged us honestly. We stayed at quite a few throughout our 2 months in Argentina, many would add extra charges.
It is a very cosy place facing late Argentina. The place is tidy and quite. Susan is the best host I have ever met. She is kind, generous and warm. I dont speak Spanish but we talked a lot using translator. I feel so relaxed with her in her cosy place. If you have more time highly suggest you spend more days here to clear up the mind. Very enjoyable and peaceful stay.
This is a very nice place to stay in a quiet part of El Calafate yet only a short walk to the centre. The owners, Ian and Tatiana, are nice and friendly, and are always happy to help with bookings, recommendations, etc. We didn't have dinner at Karut Josh but the sandwiches they prepare for the vianda were delicious. I have no doubts to recommend this posada!
We really enjoyed our stay at Xelena while we were visiting El Calafate. The hotel is well maintained, very clean with great amenities and views. The rooms are sizable and beds are very comfortable. We took advantage of Xelena spa services (massage was good and very affordable) and also enjoyed their pool & sauna. Breakfast was nice too.
Highly recommended.
Absolutely an amazing hotel!
it was a great surprise. I was staying first half of my trip in different hotel and moved to this one for the second half.. I regretted that I didn’t stay here all time. the place is the great surprise for such town as el calafate. very posh. the room was stunning. the staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
We loved Mary and her apartments! This is a great spot for anyone staying in El Calafate. Though not central, it is very close to the bus terminal. The apartments are very well equipped and very comfortable. And I can't enphasize it enough: Mary is a super host ! :)
beautiful view overlooking Lago Argentina. 2nd bedroom a plus for belongings. Grill and patio a great plus - we were able to have our first self-cooked meal in a month.
Mary, the owner, is incredibly responsive, warm and kind.
Absolutely the best hotel in el Calafate! Just 1 street away from the mainstreet where all the restaurants, bars and booking agencies are located. Breakfast was really good, great variaty.
Rooms are very clean and spacious.
The room ! Ultra clean, very spacious, very well decorated, beautiful view.
I don't understand the bad comments. It was one of the best places during our 3 weeks stay in Argentina.
Hosts are very nice and gentle.
Comfortable, modern hotel on the outskirts of El Calafate. Good size room with comfortable bed and modern bathroom. Decent breakfast included. Off-street parking. Friendly staff.
L’os Ponchos is a fantastic boutique hotel. It is tastefully designed with great attention to detail. The staff is super helpful and nice. An absolute recommendation in El Calafate.
