Male city is the capital of Maldives. You have to spend a night here if you arrive on a late international flight as the seaplanes which take you to most resorts only operate during day time hours. We stayed one night here, arrived late evening and left at 10:30am the next day. Because we are early risers (travelling with an infant) it gave us enough time to go for a stroll in the morning and check out their local market and fish market. Not sure there's really anything else to see! So wouldn't recommend spending anymore than one day here.
Male is a tiny island capital city of Maldives, only 2 sq kms area. good cab availability and many choices for resort islands. One has to plan well for each day of stay to make the maximum. slightly expensive on the pocket. For souvenirs I would recommend that you buy at the airport terminal on departure. City shops can rip you off completely.
There is nothing to see in this city (concrete jungle) except a few spots for which you can dedicate not more than 6 hours to visit. it's very crowded with rocket-like motorcycles driven by rushing fools which makes one feel unsafe.
There are some good food choices and the beach volleyball area is open for public use, which we took advantage of. However don't stay here longer than needed (i.e. 1 night before leaving for the airport or another island). It's a bit run down, not really photo worthy, no nice beaches, and locals aren't as 'chill' as ones on other islands such as Maafushi. It's also more expensive than some islands.
Walk around with a tour guide to let know the history about the places in the tiny and beautiful city Male, there are many things to discover, but with a local guide who is welling to give the best out of his knowledge, quite interesting that I have never felt anole in my second visit with out a guide. You get to the people's mind when the guide explain about the history of the place and how they react with an insider. The nominal sum to a tour guide will make a difference with a treasury of knowledge. Very nice Maldivian people. I liked the place.
