Perhaps the most helpful staff of any hotel I’ve stayed in. They also have free snacks and drinks (including alcohol) every day. The rooms and entire hotel has a Balinese theme with carvings and gamelan music in the background- very serene. The views from the rooms are a sweeping panorama overlooking Toba Harbor. The sunsets and early morning were especially spectacular. Toba is pretty far off the beaten path for English-speaking tourists, so you’ll need Google translate to get around, but the vibe of the town is very laid back. Reminds me of a Japanese Bar Harbor, Maine. Amazing seafood too!

The female owner has an inquisitive mind, a warm personality, and a kind heart. Her English is good enough to communicate and ask for help. The sauna and the private onsen in the room are top-notch. I did not check the public onsen with natural hot spring, but heard it's amazing too. I booked the 5th floor with an ocean view, and the private onsen experience during starry night and the set rise were indeed amazing! The hotel itself is located in a remote little cute fish town called osatsucho, where you can find fishmen and women harvesting and selling the Ise lobsters in the morning by the port. It was a very unique and interesting experience to stay in that little town for two days during the winter when it was not crowded at all. The nearest convenience store is 10 + miles away. It was a very natural, grounding, even retreat-like experience to me, and it was drastically different from my experience in Tokyo, Nayoga, or Osaka. I did spot a few demolished houses with broken windows in the town, not sure if it's because of COVID or during the winter when there were fewer tourists. The big plus is the Shinmei shrine next door to the hotel, which is a very calming and spiritual place to visit and stay for a bit too.
