Humahuaca is a must if you are in Jujuy. Don't just pass by, stay there for a while! Go to the mountains, enjoy life in this lovely town and learn more about the culture in the museum of the "Patrimonio Cultural Intangible"!
A very interesting small town with lots of history and period charm. The local people are very friendly and helpful. There are a lot of small B&Bs, hostels, hostelerias. The many market stalls and small businesses were selling what looked like mass-produced tourist items; we did not find any real 'crafts people' there, but were not in shopping mode, either.
We traveled to Humahuaca to see the 14 colores yet we were unable to do that because of the bad weather... anyhow, the village is very small and one day there is enough. The best food we had was at the hostel La Puerta Verde that had various vegetarian options to choose from.
Sadly, I only arrived in the evening and spent one night there. I used the late afternoon to go to the viewpoint of El Hornocal, it's amazing! It's quite a long way there (~22km up the mountain) but it definitely pays off. In the evening, the traditional folklore festival took place in front of the monument of independency. It was just gorgeous! Local artists performing typical music. I wish I had more time to see the city itself and the museums.
It is not so easy to discribe. We also went to Purmamarca and Tilcara. In comparison to these towns Humahuaca is the most authentic place in respect to the dayly life on the streets! The inhabitants are - with proof - very proud of their history and what their ancestors have reached for "pais Argentina" to reach liberty from occupation. The monumento della indepencia is worth to be bisited and the old town is nice, especially in the evening. Several restaurants offer tourist but some also local food. The landscape arround is fantastic and excursionsvon all directions can be conducted. Humahuaca is a very good location to stay for a few days if one wants to explore the northern Jujuy region.
Humahuaca is a nice place to stay for a few days to explore the surrrounding area. There are plantyful of restaurants offered local cursines, the best one is Artiso Bar that have good live folk music every evening and good food.
